The Original Overdo Novel Isn’t a Love Story—It’s a Harsh Critique of Feudal China

Ren Susu in the Novel vs. the Drama: From a Survivor Seeking Revenge to a Woman Broken by Society

If Murong Qingyi undergoes the greatest transformation in the adaptation, Ren Susu is a close second.

The drama turns her into an active heroine determined to uncover the truth and punish those responsible for her family’s destruction.

The novel tells a far quieter—and far more heartbreaking—story.

Ren Susu in the Drama

In Overdo, Ren Susu drives much of the narrative.

After her family is massacred, she is sent to Ren’ai Orphanage, where young girls endure years of imprisonment and abuse.

Those experiences reshape her completely.

Rather than accepting her fate, Susu chooses to fight back.

She searches for Xiaolan, someone deeply important to her past, and eventually joins forces with other survivors who share her determination to bring down those responsible for their suffering.

Following her staged death, she returns under the identity of Fang Mulan, the daughter of a wealthy Southeast Asian businessman.

Elegant, intelligent, and calculating, she infiltrates Shanghai’s elite circles while secretly investigating the conspiracy behind her family’s massacre.

She even becomes engaged to Murong Qingyu as part of her carefully planned mission.

Yet despite dedicating her life to revenge, she never completely lets go of Murong Qingyi.

The happiest memories of her life are still tied to him.

On several occasions, she quietly protects him while continuing to hide behind the identity of Fang Mulan.

The drama ultimately portrays Susu as a resilient, resourceful woman who refuses to allow tragedy to define her future.

Ren Susu in the Novel

The original novel presents an entirely different woman.

She has no second identity.

She never creates a secret organization.

She never spends years plotting revenge.

Instead, Ren Susu is an ordinary young woman born into poverty.

As an opera performer, she occupies one of the lowest positions in society and has little control over her own future.

Her dream is almost painfully simple.

She wants a peaceful home.

She wants a family that genuinely loves her.

She wants an ordinary life.

After entering the Murong household, even those modest hopes slowly disappear.

She is never accepted as part of the family.

Relatives despise her background.

Servants treat her with contempt because they know no one will punish them for doing so.

Day after day, she endures humiliation with no one to defend her.

The person she depends on most never realizes how deeply she is suffering.

Qingyi believes expensive gifts can replace emotional support.

He mistakes comfort for happiness.

He confuses protection with control.

Little by little, the constant pressure destroys Susu’s spirit.

She does not fight back.

She does not seek revenge.

She simply survives for as long as she can.

When she finally disappears from the Murong household, it is not because she has become stronger than those who hurt her.

It is because remaining there would destroy what little remained of her.

Two Women, Two Different Messages

The transformation of Ren Susu fundamentally changes the story’s message.

The television drama celebrates resilience.

Its heroine refuses to surrender and takes control of her own destiny.

The novel offers no such empowerment.

Instead, Fei Wo Si Cun explores what happens when an ordinary person is gradually crushed by a society designed to deny her dignity.

Ren Susu does not lose because she lacks courage.

She loses because she lives in a world that never allows her the freedom to choose.
