The view count and hours viewed surpass the highest figures a Mandarin-language drama had previously posted on the same list, set by the workplace romance The Early Spring (早春晴朗). The Early Spring reached No. 2 globally from the start of its run on Netflix. Its peak of 3.2 million views and 45.7 million hours viewed was recorded between late August and early September, when it also ranked No. 2. HK01 reports it was the first Mandarin-language drama to reach the top three on the list.
Where the Mask Ends therefore ranks lower (No. 4) than the peak position of The Early Spring (No. 2). However, its view count is 600,000 higher, and its hours viewed are also greater.
The drama also made the weekly top 10 in 35 countries and regions. It ranked No. 1 in five markets: Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Singapore.
In mainland China, where the drama airs on Youku and the CCTV-8 television channel, its performance has also stood out:
- Its popularity index on Youku passed 10,000 within 48 hours and 17 minutes of its premiere. It peaked at 10,082, which ranks No. 7 on the platform’s all-time peak popularity list.
- According to Yunhe Data, a viewership analytics firm, the drama’s share of effective views of full episodes rose from 8.9 percent on day one to 27.4 percent on October 28. It has ranked first for 12 consecutive days and earned an S+ rating.
- Total views on Lighthouse, a Chinese entertainment data platform, passed 1 billion on October 28.
- Ratings for its premiere on CCTV-8 exceeded 1 percent.
The 30-episode drama is written by Zhou Mo, a screenwriter of Story of Yanxi Palace. Tian Xiwei stars as Wei Rao and Yan An as Lu Zhuo, heir to the title of Duke of Ying. Wang Yinan plays Guo Yufeng, and Mao Linlin plays Zhou Fu.
The drama is adapted from the novel of the same name by Xiao Jiaren. It follows Wei Rao, the biological daughter of a noble family, who was switched at birth and grew up among ordinary people, working as a night-soil carrier. Jun Dai, the false daughter, took her place in the household and is spoiled and domineering.
Lu Zhuo is gravely wounded and falls into a coma after defending the city. His family needs a daughter of the noble household to marry him as part of “chong xi,” a marriage custom believed to bring recovery to the ill. Jun Dai refuses, so Wei Rao takes her place to pay for her mother’s medical care. Lu Zhuo wakes on the wedding night and is wary of the unfamiliar woman who is now his wife. Meanwhile, Jun Dai repeatedly sets traps for Wei Rao, from setting a fire during her visit to her parents’ home to pushing her underwater on Qixi night and acting against her at a birthday banquet.
The mastermind behind the switch, according to the synopsis, is Guo Yufeng, the household’s principal wife. She holds a grudge because her engagement was broken off 20 years ago. She arranged the baby swap and tried to make the two girls hurt each other in order to wound Wei Rao’s biological mother, Zhou Fu. The story then shifts from household rivalry to court intrigue and the border region.
