In a Weibo post, Tencent Video included a two-line teaser: “Through shrouded mysteries, uncovering the unwritten scroll of the Great Tang; in the glow of tender lantern light, pledging a lifetime to the one who walks beside you.” The hashtag used contains E Chang, fans’ nickname for Tencent, a reference to the company’s penguin logo.
The drama is directed by Fei Zhenxiang. In the official post, Tian Xiwei and Song Weilong are listed as the leads, ordered by the stroke count of their family names. According to information circulating on Weibo and MyDramaList, the screenplay is written by Fang Qiangqiang, and the project is co-produced by Tencent Video and Xinguang Pictures.
Synopsis
Da Tang Pi Zhu Ji is adapted from the novel of the same name by Fan Ka. In the official synopsis, Baozhu, a princess of the Tang Dynasty, is buried alive. She is rescued by chance by Wei Xun, a tomb robber suffering from a strange illness.
Having narrowly escaped death, the princess sets out for Youzhou to find her older brother. Wei Xun, a martial artist whose life is always shadowed by mortal danger, accompanies her along the way in the guise of a linu, an old term for a cat. Along the road, the two face assassination threats and a string of mysterious cases. Together with a group of unconventional companions, they make their way through the martial world and the imperial court, solving puzzles and trying to protect a Tang Dynasty in turmoil.
According to material circulating on Weibo and MyDramaList, Tian Xiwei plays Princess Wanshou, Li Baozhu, while Song Weilong plays Wei Xun. The drama is reportedly styled as a road-journey story with mystery cases and Tang-era supernatural tales, rather than a pure romance.
Collaboration reports before the announcement
Talk of a Tian Xiwei and Song Weilong pairing actually predates this project. Around May 2026, the entertainment site Jaynestars reported a rumor that the two would team up in a different drama, Chao Re Yu Ji Wei Jie Zhi Mi (潮热雨季未解之谜) — Unsolved Mysteries of the Humid Rainy Season. That project has not been confirmed.
Reports specific to Da Tang Pi Zhu Ji surfaced around August 2026, according to reports circulating on Weibo, through a leaked crew call sheet. The sheet reportedly said filming would begin in late November in Hengdian, with a schedule of about 120 days and a total of 36 episodes. In those early reports, the male lead reportedly changed several times before settling on Song Weilong.
At 5:05 p.m. on October 27, a Weibo account wrote that the two were confirmed for the drama and that the announcement would come the next day. MyDramaList also reported that fan clubs for both actors posted similar news before the official announcement. Several reports say the filming schedule later shifted. Some point to early 2027 or the first quarter, while others say February 2027. The production side has not confirmed a filming start date or a premiere schedule.
Some Chinese netizens on Weibo have questioned whether Song Weilong suits the character Wei Xun, who is described in the novel as slim and pale. Other netizens have praised Tian Xiwei’s look in Tang-style costume. These are purely netizen opinions and have not been addressed by the production side.
