Tian Xiwei plays two characters. Wei Rao is the biological daughter of the Wei family who was switched as a child and grew up as a servant at the very bottom of society. Even so, she never gave in to fate and comes across as smart and resourceful. Jun Dai is the fake daughter who lived as the wealthy family’s young lady. She is wicked and willful.
Tian Xiwei’s gaze and voice as Jun Dai are strikingly different from her usual sweet image, and her performance has drawn praise. Viewers also say her acting has improved, especially in scenes where Wei Rao faces off with Jun Dai and holds her own.
In the latest storyline, Wei Rao already knows she is the biological daughter of Zhou Fu (played by Mao Linlin). She goes to Zhou Fu carrying the longevity lock (changmingsuo) she has had since childhood. But the lock has been swapped, so Zhou Fu assumes Wei Rao is a fake daughter falsely claiming to be hers. Wei Rao is devastated.
Meanwhile, Jun Dai invites Wei Rao to her room. She offers to spare Wei Rao’s life if she agrees to leave. In reality, Jun Dai has prepared poisoned wine to kill her. In the end, it is Jun Dai who drinks the wine and dies.
Jun Dai collapses in Wei Rao’s arms just as Zhou Fu and the Wei family walk into the room. They assume Wei Rao killed her. Zhou Fu, believing her daughter has been murdered, points a sword at Wei Rao and demands an explanation.
Wei Rao feels she has endured 16 years of hardship. Just when she thought she had finally found her birth mother, she is misunderstood. She answers, “Yes, I killed her!”
Lu Zhuo (played by Yan An) then steps in to stop the chaos and lays out the truth.
The mastermind behind the swap is Guo Yufeng (Wang Yinan), the Wei family’s eldest daughter-in-law. She was originally supposed to marry Wei Jing, Zhou Fu’s first husband. But Wei Jing fell in love with Zhou Fu, so the Wei family married Guo Yufeng off to the eldest son, a lecherous and incompetent man. Her resentment led her to quietly help Wei Heng’e (Chen Zihan) swap her illegitimate daughter, Jun Dai, with Wei Rao. Many viewers have called Guo Yufeng’s actions cruel.
Meanwhile, the new drama Tigers Sniff the Rose (尚公主), starring Meng Ziyi and Li Yunrui, premiered on October 23. Where the Mask Ends has only 30 episodes and has aired up to episode 16. To prolong its run, the production team has decided to release one episode per day for the rest of the broadcast. It remains to be seen whether viewer enthusiasm will hold up.
