Some Chinese Viewers Are Reminded of Pursuit of Jade While Watching Where the Mask Ends for a Few Reasons, as the Novels and Dramas Share Similarities

LayarHijau — Some viewers in China are linking the drama Where the Mask Ends (嫁金钗) to Pursuit of Jade (逐玉) in posts on Weibo. One poster said they rewatched Pursuit of Jade after watching Where the Mask Ends. Pursuit of Jade premiered on March 6, 2026, while Where the Mask Ends followed on October 16, 2026.

The first post came from an account that claims to be an entertainment blogger. The blogger wrote that a scene in Where the Mask Ends in which the male lead protects his wife reminded them of a line from Fan Changyu, a character in Pursuit of Jade. The blogger also said an ad that appeared during the broadcast of Where the Mask Ends featured Zhang Linghe, the Chinese actor who plays Xie Zheng in Pursuit of Jade, calling the appearance a treat for fans.

pursuit of jade x where the mask ends

The second post, from another account, only mentioned the order in which the two dramas aired and that the writer rewatched Pursuit of Jade. Engagement on both posts is small: 689 likes and 11 reposts on the first, and 38 likes on the second. So this is so far just chatter among some viewers, not a big trend on Weibo.

A few similarities make the two dramas easy to connect.

Shared cast members. Chinese actress Tian Xiwei plays Fan Changyu, the wife of Xie Zheng, in Pursuit of Jade. In Where the Mask Ends, she plays Wei Rao, the female lead. Actress Nikita Mao also appears in both dramas. In Pursuit of Jade, she plays Xie Zheng’s mother, while in Where the Mask Ends she plays Wei Rao’s mother and shares many scenes with Tian Xiwei. Taiwanese media outlet Marie Claire described them as a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law who never met, now turned mother and daughter.

The same title, for different reasons. In Pursuit of Jade, Xie Zheng holds the title of Marquis Wu’an. According to the novel’s page on Jinjiang, he was made a marquis at age 20 for his military achievements. Wu’an (武安) is made up of characters meaning “military” and “peace.” The classical commentary Shiji Zhengyi interprets the title as describing a general who cares for his soldiers, always wins his wars, and brings peace to the people.

The title has a long history in China, mostly for military figures. Generals Bai Qi and Li Mu both held it and both met tragic ends. Liu Bang, founder of the Han dynasty, also held the title of Wu’an and went on to found a great dynasty.

Wei Rao in Where the Mask Ends also holds the title Wu’an, but she gets it a different way. In the drama, she reportedly tears up land deeds and frees tenant farmers, meaning farmers who work land owned by others. She also helps refugees. The people then draw up a petition, and the emperor grants her the title Wu’an. She receives it while still married to Lu Zhuo.

In the novel, the story is different again. Wei Rao earns the title Wu’an by exposing a plot between the Han family (Marquis Xiting and Han Liao) and the enemy kingdom of Wudang. The two sides also set a trap for Lu Zhuo and “kill” him, and the plot causes the deaths of many soldiers of the Daqi kingdom. She receives the title only at the end of the story, when she is already a widow.

So Xie Zheng’s title is tied to victory on the battlefield, while Wei Rao’s is tied to peace for the people.

Interestingly, no Chinese netizens appear to have made wild accusations over these similarities, such as claiming that Where the Mask Ends is riding on the popularity of Pursuit of Jade. That makes sense when you look at the timeline.

The source novel of Where the Mask Ends is Jia Jin Chai (嫁金钗) — Marrying a Golden Hairpin by Xiaojiaren. It began publication on Jinjiang on February 3, 2021. The source novel of Pursuit of Jade is Hou Furen Yu Sha Zhu Dao (侯夫人与杀猪刀) — The Marquis’s Wife and the Pig-Slaughtering Knife by Tuanzi Laixi. It began serialization on the same site only in 2022. That means the title Wu’an for Wei Rao already existed in her novel before the Pursuit of Jade novel was published.

The production schedules line up the same way. Pursuit of Jade filmed from December 15, 2024, to April 22, 2025. Where the Mask Ends began filming on December 12, 2025, in Hengdian, when Pursuit of Jade had not yet aired, and wrapped around early April 2026. When the scripts and casting were being worked out, the title Marquis Wu’an had not yet become an icon among fans. We also found no statement from the production side suggesting the similarities were planned. The shared cast members and title are better described as a coincidence that viewers later started talking about.
