Her appearance lasts only a few scenes. Still, Pan Junya stands out in a form-fitting qipao, the traditional Chinese dress. With her captivating eyes and slightly full lips, she has been compared to the glamorous beauties of classic Hong Kong films.
Where the Mask Ends stars Tian Xiwei and Yan An, and it now ranks first on Netflix in Taiwan. Tian Xiwei plays two roles: A Chou, a poor young woman who takes the place of a noble daughter to marry into the Lu family, and Jun Dai, the cruel noble daughter.
As the story unfolds, it is revealed that A Chou is actually Wei Rao, the noble family’s daughter who was switched at birth. This makes Jun Dai the fake Wei Rao. After the marriage, A Chou takes the name Wei Rao, while the fake Wei Rao changes her name to Jun Dai.
Bitao is Jun Dai’s personal maid, back when Jun Dai still went by the name Wei Rao. Jun Dai is known for her cruelty toward servants. In the first episode, she slashes Bitao’s face with a hairpin, leaving it bloody and disfigured. The scene became one of the drama’s most shocking moments.
After A Chou marries into the Lu family, Bitao goes with her to serve there. She was actually placed beside A Chou as a spy by Madam Guo, the wife of the Lu family’s eldest brother. But A Chou gives her scar-removal ointment, burns her servitude contract in front of her, and treats her with sincerity. Bitao softens, and the two become a mistress and maid who depend on each other.
Bitao is also an important witness to A Chou and Jun Dai’s identity swap and to the growing closeness between A Chou and Lu Zhuo (Yan An), so she gets quite a lot of screen time.
Many viewers have praised the striking looks of the actress who plays Bitao. Pan Junya is 24 and was born in the early 2000s. She took part in the 2018 girl group survival show Produce 101 China and graduated from the Beijing Film Academy.
Pan Junya has also played supporting roles in several popular dramas:
Linglong in Moonlight Mystique (白月梵星), the saintess of the fox clan at Jingyou Mountain, who has a tragic love story with Quan Yilun.
Qin Shuang in Coroner’s Diary (朝雪录), the daughter of a concubine in the Qin family’s third branch, who is naive and endearing.
Zhang Tai in Love in the Clouds (入青云), a fairy and dancer at the Hua Yue Ye entertainment house in Ji Xing Yuan, and the outspoken best friend of the female lead played by Lu Yuxiao.
