On its home platform, Youku, the drama also posted strong numbers after its Oct. 16 premiere. Within three days, its popularity index topped 10,000.
To celebrate, Tian Xiwei gave fans red envelopes worth a total of 30,000 yuan (about $4,500) on Weibo on Oct. 18. Netizens praised her generosity.
Where the Mask Ends stars Tian Xiwei opposite Yan An. She plays two characters in the drama, and her performance has drawn mixed reactions.
Supporters say she clearly separates the two roles. Through subtle facial expressions and shifts in her gaze, she blends a sweet appearance with a ruthless nature. Some viewers, however, find the villainess scenes overacted and closer to the heightened style of short-form drama.
When netizens asked whether switching between the two roles was difficult, Tian Xiwei replied only, “As long as the audience enjoys watching it, I’m happy too.”
Before Where the Mask Ends has even wrapped, attention has also turned to her latest drama, the contemporary The Winner (青风吹又生), co-starring actor Wei Daxun. The drama has reportedly completed about 70 percent of filming.
Tian Xiwei again plays two characters: Lin Qing, a girl from a small town, and Liang Meng, a wealthy heiress. The two accidentally swap identities. Lin Qing is forced into the turmoil of a rich family and meets the eldest son of the Liang family, played by Wei Daxun. The two calculate each other’s moves in a psychological battle.
From Sweet Girl to Lead Actress
Tian Xiwei was born in 1997 in Chongqing, China, and studied acting at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. In college, her large eyes and sweet smile earned her the nickname “campus beauty” among netizens.
She began her career with the youth drama Waiting for You in a Long Time (在悠长的时光里等你) in 2018. Her popularity then grew with her role in Lovely Us (如此可爱的我们), and she became associated with a sweet-girl image.
In 2022, she starred opposite Bai Jingting in the period drama New Life Begins (卿卿日常). Her turn as the cheerful, food-loving Li Wei raised her profile further. She then broadened her range with Wrong Carriage, Right Groom (花轿喜事), Romance on the Farm (田耕纪), In Between (半熟男女), and Moonlit Reunion (子夜归).
In the first half of 2026, she played Fan Changyu, a pig butcher, in Pursuit of Jade (逐玉). She starred opposite Zhang Linghe, who played the Marquis of Wu’an, and the drama posted standout ratings. Born with Luck (低智商犯罪) and Where the Mask Ends followed.
With Pursuit of Jade and Where the Mask Ends, attention is no longer limited to her sweet looks. Viewers are now noticing the strength of her roles and her pull as a lead. Dramas she has starred in have topped 10,000 on the popularity index at all three of China’s major video platforms: Tencent Video, iQIYI, and Youku. She is the second actress after Esther Yu to reach that mark, and is now among the most popular young actresses born in the 1990s.
