LayarHijau — Actor Zhang Linghe built a home gym to prepare for his role as a fallen general in the historical drama Pursuit of Jade (逐玉). He lifted weights and did cardio to build a more muscular physique that suits the character.
In the series, Zhang Linghe plays Marquis Wu’an, a military nobleman who survived assasination attempts but heavily injured. He is rescued by Fan Changyu, a pork butcher played by Tian Xiwei. The two enter a fake marriage to keep her home, and genuine feelings gradually develop between them.

Zhang Linghe said he set up the gym as soon as he accepted the role. Whenever he had free time, he lifted weights and did cardio, which also helped him relieve the stress of filming.
He admitted he struggled at first with the armor he had to wear, which weighs 44 to 66 pounds. After wearing it several times, he got used to it. The experience gave him a better understanding of how hard it was for generals to fight on the battlefield in ancient times.
The fight scenes, by contrast, got him fired up. Zhang Linghe said he naturally enjoys action sequences and leading troops into battle. Pursuit of Jade is the historical drama in which he has been injured more than in any other. Out of 40 episodes, his character is wounded in 30. The director included not only scenes of him coughing up blood, but also plenty of facial wound makeup and a large amount of blood on his body.
Even so, Zhang Linghe did not complain. He said being wounded made his character look heroic. He even rated his fighting ability as matching a Chinese idiom for the highest military achievement, which refers to Han dynasty general Huo Qubing, who defeated the Xiongnu and reached Mount Langjuxu.
To make the fight scenes more powerful, Zhang Linghe studied visuals from video games together with the director. The pheasant tail feather ornament on the general’s helmet was also inspired by a game. He even bought a game console as a gift for the director, a sign of how committed he was to the role.
