LayarHijau — The period drama Where The Mask Ends (嫁金钗) premiered on October 16, 2026, on Netflix and Youku. The 30-episode series stars Tian Xiwei and Yan An. For readers of the original novel, the story has been changed in several major ways.
The drama is adapted from the novel Jia Jin Chai (嫁金钗) — Marrying a Golden Hairpin, so its Chinese title is the same as the novel’s. The novel was written by Xiaojiaren and published on the platform Jinjiang Literature City. The drama is directed by Yang Long, with a script by Zhou Mo, the screenwriter of Story of Yanxi Palace (延禧攻略).

The drama keeps the chong xi marriage, a wedding meant to ward off bad luck, as well as the love story that grows after the wedding. However, the heroine’s background and the circumstances of the marriage have been significantly changed.
Spoiler alert: the discussion below reveals plot points and character identities from both the drama and the novel.
The heroine’s background
In the novel, Wei Rao comes from the noble Chengan family. She is strikingly beautiful but has a poor reputation. She is strong-minded and unafraid to decide her own path. She already lives among the aristocracy and does not need to take anyone’s place to marry into the duke’s household.
In the drama, the heroine starts out as a commoner. Tian Xiwei plays A Chou, a girl who empties chamber pots for a living to survive. Because she looks like the daughter of a noble family, she is drawn into a substitute marriage scheme.
The real and fake daughters
The novel has no conflict between a real daughter and a fake one. Wei Rao is a single character.
The drama adds two characters with the same face, both played by Tian Xiwei. The first is A Chou, who turns out to be the real Wei Rao and lives among commoners. The second is Jun Dai, the fake daughter of a marquis’s family, who is portrayed as ruthless. The clash between their interests drives the story, along with secret identities and intrigue within noble households. This change affects the entire structure of the story rather than merely adding a rival.
Why the marriage happens
In the novel, before agreeing to the chong xi marriage, Wei Rao first negotiates her terms. According to the official synopsis on Jinjiang Literature City, she demands a bride price of 100,000. If Lu Zhuo dies, she takes nothing. If he survives, her husband’s side may not divorce her or cast her out for five years. The marriage is a contractual arrangement that shows Wei Rao’s willingness to take risks while knowing how to protect herself.
In the drama, the marriage begins with a noble daughter looking for a stand-in. A Chou agrees to marry in someone else’s name and enters the duke’s household under an identity that is not her own. Both versions use the chong xi marriage as the starting point of the relationship. The difference is that the novel emphasizes the marriage terms, while the drama first puts the danger of the disguise on screen.
The story’s focus
The novel’s appeal lies in its contractual marriage and the relationship that grows after the wedding. Readers follow the leads as they move from mutual prejudice to genuine care for each other.
The drama places more of its conflict on the concealed identity, the rivalry between the two daughters, and the threats that follow once A Chou enters the duke’s household. She must build trust with Lu Zhuo while dealing with clues that could expose her disguise and a series of schemes. Based on the plot made public so far, the drama blends romance with a struggle over identity, which also shifts what viewers focus on.
According to several media reports, these changes have left some novel readers dissatisfied. They point to Wei Rao’s appeal as a woman who actively negotiates terms and makes her own choices, and worry that her character will be diluted by the added real-and-fake-daughter storyline and the substitute marriage. Whether changing her background necessarily weakens the character still depends on how the drama portrays A Chou’s decisions and actions.
