LayarHijau — A Weibo hot-search topic, “Zhang Linghe and Cheng Lei’s female leads are all the same,” has set off lively discussion among drama fans. Netizens noticed that five actresses, Bai Lu, Wang Churan, Lu Yuxiao, Lin Yun, and Xu Ruohan, have each acted opposite both Chinese actors in recent years.
Netizens called the overlap a coincidence. Some joked that it is the entertainment-industry version of “transit love” (huancheng lian’ai).

Bai Lu starred with Zhang Linghe in Story of Kunning Palace (宁安如梦), a costume drama about a love story woven into power struggles. She later acted opposite Cheng Lei in The First Jasmine (莫离).
Wang Churan appeared in Overdo (这一秒过火), a drama set in Republican-era China, with Zhang Linghe. She also starred in the costume drama How Dare You!? (成何体统) with Cheng Lei. The switch in partners gives viewers a chance to compare the characters and on-screen chemistry.
Lu Yuxiao and Cheng Lei formed an on-screen couple (CP) known as Ye Se Shang Qian in My Journey to You (云之羽), which drew viewers’ attention. Lu Yuxiao later teamed up with Zhang Linghe in the new drama Revenge (刺棠).
Xu Ruohan has appeared in two dramas of different genres. With Zhang Linghe, she starred in the modern drama The Best Thing (爱你). With Cheng Lei, she starred in The Lament of Autumn (玉簟秋), which moves from modern romance to a love story set in a time of upheaval.
Lin Yun rounds out the list. She worked with Zhang Linghe in The Road to Glory (归鸾) and with Cheng Lei in Footprints of Change (足迹).
Zhang Linghe and Cheng Lei themselves became acquainted through My Journey to You. Now they are linked again through the same leading ladies, which has prompted discussion about casting patterns in the drama industry.
Despite the overlap in co-stars, the two actors have distinct styles. Zhang Linghe has a youthful look and readily builds direct, intense emotional tension when playing deeply feeling characters. Cheng Lei more often conveys a character’s complicated inner thoughts through restrained, understated acting. With different co-stars and different stories, fans can compare the appeal of each pairing.
