Tian Xiwei plays two characters. The first is Wei Rao, the arrogant daughter of the Earl Chengan household. The second is Achou, a commoner who later takes Wei Rao’s place in marriage.
Wei Rao Known as Arrogant and Cruel
Wei Rao is strikingly beautiful but cruel. At a banquet at the princess’s residence, she overhears Xie Hualou’s maid, who talks about her behind her back. Xie Hualou (played by Yang Yutong) is the daughter of a Grand Tutor. Wei Rao takes the maid up to the loft of a rockery pavilion and slaps her.
When Xie Hualou arrives to plead for mercy, she is slapped too, then pushed off the loft by Wei Rao. Lu Zhuo (played by Yan An) happens to be there and rescues Xie Hualou. After seeing Wei Rao’s harsh and cruel behavior, Lu Zhuo decides his fiancée is unfit to become the lady of the Lu household and wants to call off the engagement.
An enraged Wei Rao slaps Lu Zhuo and says, “You will never get away from me, not for all eternity.”
Achou Marries in Wei Rao’s Place
Lu Zhuo had planned to break off the engagement after returning from the battlefield. However, he is struck by a poisoned arrow and reportedly falls unconscious and near death. Wei Rao does not want to become a widow and wants to cancel the marriage, but the match was decreed by the Empress Dowager and cannot be refused. Wei Rao’s aunt then decides to find a substitute bride.
Meanwhile, Achou’s gambling-addicted father sells her to a debt collector. When the debt collector tries to rape Achou, he is killed instead, and Achou is made a prisoner. Wei Rao’s aunt spots Achou in a prison cart and takes her to serve as the substitute. Wei Rao changes her name to Jun Dai and goes on with her life.
Two Characters Cross Paths, and a One-Year Contract
The two characters had actually met before. Wei Rao’s sedan chair bumped into Achou. Even though Achou knelt and apologized, she was still punished with 20 lashes. Achou noticed that she looked like Wei Rao, yet their fates were completely different. That sense of unfairness drives Achou to seize every opportunity after she takes Wei Rao’s place.
After the wedding, Lu Zhuo wakes up and still intends to cancel the marriage. But Achou, posing as Wei Rao, unintentionally saves Lu Zhuo’s younger brother and becomes a benefactor of the Lu family. The two sides then agree to a one-year contract marriage.
Bed Scene Draws Attention
Lu Zhuo had known Wei Rao as an arrogant person. After the wedding, he finds that his wife behaves very differently, and the two gradually grow closer.
In one scene, Lu Zhuo walks into the bedroom and finds Achou, posing as Wei Rao, lying on the bed in a red dudou (a traditional Chinese undergarment), with an erotic picture book beside her. Lu Zhuo appears flustered.
Many netizens praised Tian Xiwei for her glance back over a slightly bare shoulder and her alluring gaze in the scene. Some netizens called When The Mask Ends a showcase of Tian Xiwei’s acting.
