LayarHijau – Director Yang Long and producer Qiushui praised Tian Xiwei at an advance screening of the Chinese historical romance drama Where the Mask Ends (嫁金钗), held in Beijing on October 10, 2026. During a post-screening discussion, they explained why they chose Tian Xiwei as the female lead and discussed the actress’s preparation for playing two characters.
Qiushui said Tian Xiwei immediately came to mind when she first received the first five episodes of the script. In her view, Tian has a strong presence and a powerful gaze. These qualities made her a good fit for Wei Rao, a clever, lively, energetic, and ambitious woman.

Director Yang Long also praised Tian Xiwei’s efforts to develop her characters. The actress worked to distinguish the two roles through her gaze, posture, and vocal delivery, giving each character a different personality and presence.
Yang Long also explained how the team filmed scenes involving both characters. They used a conventional filming method, with Tian first completing the scenes as one character before performing as the other. The two performances were then combined through editing so viewers could see both characters within the same sequence.
In Where the Mask Ends, Tian Xiwei plays Wei Rao and Jun Dai, two women who look identical but lead very different lives. Wei Rao is a noblewoman whose identity was switched when she was young. She grows up in difficult circumstances under the name A Chou. Jun Dai, meanwhile, is the impostor heiress who enjoys a life of luxury.
Yan An plays Lu Zhuo, a noble family heir who suffers a serious injury and needs a marriage believed to bring good fortune to his recovery. A Chou eventually takes Jun Dai’s place as Lu Zhuo’s bride to obtain money for her adoptive mother’s medical treatment. After Lu Zhuo regains consciousness, their relationship develops amid family intrigue, an identity dispute, and secrets from the past.
The historical romance drama is adapted from the novel of the same name by Xiao Jiaren. Where the Mask Ends is scheduled to premiere on October 16, 2026, on Youku and CCTV-8, with an international release planned through Netflix. According to circulating reports, the drama will have 24 episodes.
