LayarHijau — To play a divorce lawyer, Chang Huasen read the Marriage and Family part of China’s Civil Code several times a day in the early stage of his preparation. He admitted, however, that only a small portion of it actually made it into his dialogue. He shared this in an interview with the entertainment outlet Sohu Entertainment about his role as Jiao Xu in the drama The Vanishing Beauty (美人余).
“I just read it, just to get familiar with it. Some of it does make it into the lines, but really not much,” Chang Huasen said. According to him, a lawyer character demands fluent speech, a fast speaking pace, and a solid grasp of legal provisions. Besides reading the code, he watched the online classes of Luo Xiang, a criminal law professor at China University of Political Science and Law whose lectures are popular on the video platform Bilibili. Chang Huasen said he enjoys those classes.

His other preparation was lighter. Jiao Xu is portrayed as a suona (a traditional Chinese wind instrument) player who is not very skilled. Chang Huasen learned how to hold the instrument and one simple tune, which he said was enough for the script. “Jiao Xu is very confident,” he said.
He said he always feels nervous before starting a new project. His way of coping is to study what the character needs and think about it at length. “Sometimes 80 to 90 percent of that thinking may be unnecessary, but the process is quite fun,” he said.
As for his character, Chang Huasen described Jiao Xu as a lawyer known for handling divorce cases for women from wealthy families, with the aim of holding problematic partners accountable. He said there are personal reasons behind Jiao Xu’s choice of profession, namely guilt and unfinished matters from his past. For that reason, he said, Jiao Xu is not simply chasing income.
Chang Huasen also described Jiao Xu as someone who lives behind a “mask.” He guessed that the character would not share his daily life on social media and would only showcase his professional abilities.
Meanwhile, netizens have attached several nicknames to Jiao Xu, including Lao Gong Wang (roughly “king of husbands”), You Ge You Die (“both older brother and father”), and Diao Xi Hu Li Nan (“a charming fox-like man”). When asked to pick one, Chang Huasen did not choose. “Netizens can attach whatever labels they like. In my eyes, he is a professional divorce lawyer,” he said.
The Vanishing Beauty stars Li Yitong, Wang Jiajia, Chang Huasen, and Zeng Mengxue. The 28-episode urban drama is adapted from a novel by Yi Bei. It premiered on October 9 on the streaming service Tencent Video, including WeTV, and has aired on the television channel Dragon TV since October 10.
The story centers on Yu Meng (Li Yitong), the only daughter of a wealthy family and an internet blogger. On her fifth wedding anniversary, she realizes that her marriage to a husband known as a model son-in-law hides a trap that threatens her family’s fortune. With help from those close to her, including Jiao Xu, Yu Meng fights to take back control of her life.
