Wang Churan’s popularity rose this year with How Dare You!? (成何体统) and Overdo (这一秒过火). Before The First Frost (难哄) began filming, netizens had called the two the best fit for its lead roles, though the drama ultimately starred Bai Jingting and Zhang Ruonan. News of this collaboration has been met with enthusiasm.
Hua Deng Chu Xia is directed by Wen Deguang, who also directed Story of Yanxi Palace (延禧攻略). The screenplay was written by Wang Xiongcheng, the writer behind Meet Yourself (去有风的地方).
The drama is adapted from a novel by Ma Xiaoru on the Douban Read platform. The story follows Chen Xi, a tough, native-born woman from Dunhuang who loves racing motorcycles and plans to open an auto repair shop. The male lead, Qin Lie, is the founder of a game with a Chinese cultural theme. After a falling-out with his business partner over differing investment views, he resigns and returns to Dunhuang.
There, his partner invites him to design a new version of the game to repair its reputation, and he looks for a suitable illustrator. That search is how he meets Chen Xi. The two develop a mature love story while bringing traditional Dunhuang culture back to life.
Song Weilong himself saw a surge in popularity this year through Shine On Me (骄阳似我), The Eternal Fragrance (千香), and Love For You (野狗骨头). The three dramas are said to have added about 7.85 million new followers across social media platforms.
According to reports, he has not been back on a film set for about a year. The crime drama Xing Jing Rong Yu (刑警荣誉) — Police Honor, described as a sister drama to Ordinary Greatness (警察荣誉), which starred Zhang Ruoyun and Bai Lu, was originally scheduled to begin filming last September with Song Weilong in the cast. The project has reportedly not gone ahead as planned.
Song Weilong has also been linked to the mystery drama Yu Mei Ren (虞美人) — Poppy Flower, which would reportedly pair him with Esther Yu Shuxin.
Song Weilong began his career as an online store model before making his acting debut under Huanyu Film in 2015. He is known for Find Yourself (下一站是幸福) and Go Ahead (以家人之名). He did not appear in any dramas in 2021-2022 and sued his agency in 2022. He now works as an independent actor.
