In the video, Maya said, “I really want to have a child soon. When I was in my first year of high school, I experienced one (pregnancy) …”
Her revelation left the host visibly stunned. Maya explained that the experience had given her a particularly strong desire to have a child of her own.
After the video attracted widespread attention, Maya took to X to clarify her remarks. She wrote, “I didn’t say I had an abortion. I’m sorry for frightening everyone.”
On October 14, Maya issued another apology in a lengthy post. She wrote, “I cannot disclose what happened afterward.” She also revealed that over the past six years, there had hardly been a single day when she had not thought about the child.
Maya expressed deep regret over making what she described as irresponsible remarks. She subsequently announced that she would temporarily stop posting on social media.
The controversy has once again drawn attention to Maya’s career, which had already been shaken by a series of scandals in 2025. She rose to prominence after playing Sumino Ichikawa in the Japanese tokusatsu series No.1 Sentai Gozyuger, a production marking the 50th anniversary of the Super Sentai franchise.
However, in September 2025, Maya became the subject of reports alleging an affair with 41-year-old Kōsuke Asai, a suit actor who was reportedly married.
In November 2025, her agency announced that it had terminated her contract after confirming that she had consumed alcohol while underage. The decision also forced her to leave No.1 Sentai Gozyuger.
News of her pregnancy revelation has prompted renewed criticism from some Super Sentai fans. Several netizens expressed disappointment over the controversies surrounding the actress and argued that they had damaged the public image she had previously built.
Comments quoted by Hong Kong 01 included, “The Super Sentai casting has turned into a nuclear-level nightmare,” and “She has completely ruined the image she built.” Another harsh comment suggested that female Super Sentai cast members from previous generations might want to take turns coming over to hit her.
Despite the renewed backlash, Maya has not disclosed further details about what happened after the pregnancy she described. In her clarification, she specifically denied saying that she had undergone an abortion, while her subsequent apology stated that she could not reveal what happened afterward.
