Synopsis
Hot Blooded follows the adventures of Guo Jing and Huang Rong, a young couple who initially want nothing more than to live a peaceful life together. As they navigate these challenges, Guo Jing and Huang Rong grow rapidly in strength and wisdom, eventually becoming two legendary martial artists.
Review
The Legend of Heroes (2024): Hot Blooded is another example of how difficult it can be to adapt a classic novel with a large cast of characters and a complex storyline. The drama’s creative team has chosen to make changes to several characters from the original novel. Huang Rong, in particular, is portrayed differently from her counterpart in the novel and previous adaptations. Other characters, including Guo Jing, Hong Qigong, Huang Yaoshi, Ouyang Feng, and Ouyang Ke, have also undergone changes. In fact, nearly every character in the drama has been given a different personality in some way.

The cast’s performances and appearances are also refreshing. Cisha, Bao Shangen, Wang Hongyi, and Huang Yi all seem well suited to their respective roles. Supporting cast members such as Meng Ziyi, Vengo Gao, and Ming Dao also deserve praise for their acting and screen presence.

The Legend of Heroes: Hot Blooded
A Fresh Adaptation with Reimagined Characters but Missing Iconic Moments
The Legend of Heroes (2024): Hot Blooded offers a fresh take on Jin Yong's classic novel through reimagined characters, the removal of scenes that demean women, and modernized costumes and visuals. However, the fast-paced narrative skips several iconic moments, while the martial arts special effects fall short of expectations. As a result, the drama feels refreshing but ultimately fails to deliver a truly satisfying viewing experience.
Good Stuff
- Reimagined characters offer a fresh and more human interpretation of the original story.
- The removal of scenes that demean women is a welcome improvement.
- The costumes, settings, and cast performances feel fresh and appealing.
Bad Stuff
- The narrative moves too quickly due to the extensive cuts to the original story.
- Several iconic scenes from the novel are missing.
- The martial arts special effects lack impact and fail to impress.
Some storylines have been removed or shortened, while others have been expanded with additional material. As a result, the narrative moves at a remarkably fast pace. This approach is hardly surprising, given the considerable length of Jin Yong’s Legend of the Condor Heroes. Adapting such a lengthy novel into a 30-episode drama is no easy task.
Changes can also be seen in the costumes, sets, and action sequences. With today’s technological advances, the sets, costumes, and special effects are naturally better than those in earlier film and television adaptations.
These changes give Hot Blooded a refreshing feel. Fans who have read Jin Yong’s Condor Trilogy countless times and watched its various adaptations will likely appreciate the decision to skip Guo Jing’s childhood and jump straight into the more important events of the story.
The changes to the characters’ personalities also make them feel more human. Guo Jing is not portrayed as simply foolish throughout the drama. At times, he can be clever and bold, both in his actions and in his words, without worrying about offending others. Huang Rong, who is known for her sweet-talking nature in the novel, is portrayed as somewhat sharp-tongued instead. Ouyang Ke, who is notorious for his lecherous womanizing in the original story, is given a different motivation for his behavior: an obsession with winning his mother’s affection.
All five of the major martial artists, including Zhou Botong, the mischievous Old Urchin, also display changes in personality. The interactions between the characters and their dialogue generally feel restrained rather than overdone.
The drama also removes several scenes from the novel that could be considered degrading to women or that reduce them to mere objects of desire. In the novel and some previous adaptations, when Ouyang Ke, Hong Qigong, and Huang Rong become stranded on an island, Ouyang Ke repeatedly attempts to sexually assault Huang Rong. These scenes have been removed.
The reunion between Mu Nianci and Guo Jing near the end of the story has also been changed. In the novel, Guo Jing and Huang Rong encounter Mu Nianci after accidentally capturing an elder of the Beggars’ Sect who turns out to have been attempting to sexually assault her. Removing or changing such scenes is certainly a commendable decision.
Furthermore, the cast delivers natural performances that successfully evoke a range of emotions from the audience.
Unfortunately, the cuts to the story also have their drawbacks. Several iconic moments cherished by fans of the novel and previous adaptations have been omitted. One example is the scene in which Guo Jing must climb a mountain if he wants to learn breathing techniques from Priest Ma Yu. This is a memorable moment in the original story.
Another missing sequence involves Guo Jing and Huang Rong having to pass a series of tests to meet the monk Yideng. The iconic fights between Guo Jing and Hong Qigong, as well as Huang Yaoshi, have also been left out.
As a result, the drama sometimes feels more like a collection of clips or highlights from a complex story than a fully developed adaptation.
On the other hand, the production could have taken greater advantage of modern technology to deliver more impressive special effects for the characters’ martial arts techniques. Although the action sequences feel distinctive and refreshing, the drama falls short in an area where it should have excelled.
Guo Jing’s signature technique, the Eighteen Dragon-Subduing Palms, is presented with fairly ordinary effects. Huang Yaoshi’s distinctive martial arts techniques are not explored in much depth either, while the Quanzhen priests’ formation techniques also look rather unremarkable.
As a wuxia drama, Hot Blooded should have paid extra attention to the special effects used in its action sequences. Even though the martial arts moves look fresh and authentic, the fights can still feel ordinary without special effects that bring their power and uniqueness to life.
Ultimately, Hot Blooded falls short of fully realizing its ambition to offer something new in its adaptation of Jin Yong’s classic novel. The effort to refresh the story produces some welcome changes, but the execution leaves much to be desired. Despite its refreshing approach, the drama ultimately fails to deliver a satisfying experience.
To be honest, now that the Hot Blooded installment has come to an end, I am not particularly enthusiastic about watching the other installments.
