Hope (2026) Review: A Korean Sci-Fi Film with a Blend of Suspense and Uniquely Korean Comedy

Synopsis:

A mysterious discovery is made on the outskirts of the remote harbor town. The residents find themselves in a desperate fight for survival against something they have never encountered before.

Review:

The Korean film Hope offers something different from other movies in the same genre. What sets it apart is its mix of suspense, horror, gore, and comedy. For the first 40-plus minutes, the “monster” said to be terrorizing the residents of a port town is never shown in full.

Instead, we only see the damage it leaves behind, through its victims, from cows to humans. The horror and suspense are built skillfully through the eyes of Police Chief Beom Seok (Hwang Jung-min) and his distant relative, Sung Ki (Zo In-sung).

The two men face the horror caused by the “monster” in two different places. Beom Seok deals with the creature’s rampage in town, while Sung Ki and his friends track it through the forest.

4.2 ★★★★☆ Good

A Unique Blend of Horror, Gore, and Comedy in a Mysterious Monster Invasion

Hope combines horror, suspense, gore, action, and comedy in a story about a port town's struggle against monsters and aliens. The film's strengths include solid performances, satisfying action sequences, and a distinctly Korean setting, although the mystery loses some of its tension once the creatures are revealed, and the visual effects are inconsistent. Several unanswered questions near the end still leave viewers curious, making the film an interesting choice for fans of science fiction with an unusual genre mix, but its graphic gore may be unsettling for some viewers.

Good Stuff

  • A unique blend of horror, action, science fiction, and comedy.
  • Solid and natural performances from the cast.
  • Exciting and satisfying action sequences.

Bad Stuff

  • Inconsistent visual effects.
  • Reduced suspense and mystery after the monsters and aliens are revealed.
  • Monster, alien, and spaceship designs that resemble those in other films and media.

The film strikes an interesting balance between gore, horror, suspense, and comedy, largely through the goofy and foolish behavior of Beom Seok and the townspeople.

The first monster to terrorize the town looks a lot like a creature from a popular Japanese anime. When I first saw it, my theory was that it was the result of a mutation. But the mystery deepens when Sung Ki and his friends discover an alien spaceship in the forest.

Beyond the suspense, horror, and mystery, Hope also delivers satisfying action, from the townspeople piling into trucks to hunt the monster with heavy weapons, to Beom Seok and Sung Ae (Hoyeon) chasing the giant creature in a police car.

There’s exciting action on Sung Ki’s side too, as he and his companions face off against three aliens, played by Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Cameron Britton. Around the midpoint, the story gets more complicated. On one side, there’s the spaceship with its three aliens; on the other, a creature that resembles a Titan from Attack on Titan. One question remains unanswered even by the end of the film: Is the creature that Beom Seok and Sung Ae kill an alien too, or something else entirely?

The gore may leave some viewers too squeamish to keep watching. But in my opinion, it makes the film feel more realistic and heightens the horror, frustration, and despair the characters feel. They see and experience firsthand that ordinary firearms are useless against these aliens and monsters. Taking down a single monster takes an enormous amount of firepower, which underscores the vast gap between human technology and strength and these alien and monstrous beings.

The apocalyptic mood deepens as the film nears its end. What starts as a fight between the residents of a remote port town, armed with whatever they have on hand, suddenly expands in scale. We can’t say for certain, but based on what happens in the final act, it’s fair to say the conflict grows into an intergalactic one.

The cast, including Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, and Hoyeon, along with the supporting players, delivers solid performances. What stands out is how naturally they bring out the human side of their characters. These are police officers and small-town residents who normally live simple lives, suddenly facing an invasion of monsters and aliens. Oddly enough, even though they live in a small town, they’re armed with everything from standard hunting rifles to automatic weapons and heavy artillery.

That’s both intriguing and a source of humor. Early on, for instance, there’s a funny contrast between the elderly locals hunting the monster with automatic rifles that look like AK-47s and the like, while Beom Seok, the police chief, carries only a revolver. His hesitant, fearful nature is another source of comedy. It’s set against his subordinate, Officer Sung Ae, who shows up in a car with a heavy double-barrel weapon. Sung Ki, who is also a local, shows the same courage and skill.

The distinctly Korean local flavor we usually see in K-dramas is also strong here, in sharp contrast to a plot about humans fighting aliens and monsters. From the locations to the vehicles to the technology on display, everything feels convincing.

The action is satisfying and convincing, such as when the characters fight the monster in town. From the shootouts to the chases on foot to jumping into a car to pursue the creature, we get action on par with a blockbuster, set against a distinctive backdrop.

Unfortunately, the film isn’t without its flaws. Once the monster and the aliens appear, the strong sense of mystery, horror, and suspense from the opening starts to fade, though my curiosity kept me watching until the end.

The special effects are also uneven. In some places they look realistic, like when the monster tears through parts of the city, destroying buildings, vehicles, and people. But the monster and aliens themselves aren’t always convincing, although compared with similar films, the difference isn’t all that glaring.

Another thing worth pointing out is the design of the monsters, aliens, and spaceship, which recall other media. As I mentioned above, the monster in the first half looks somewhat like a Titan from Attack on Titan, while elements of the alien ship are reminiscent of other films, especially Man of Steel.

Despite its shortcomings in special effects and creature design, Hope leaves you curious, thanks to questions that are deliberately left open. If a sequel does happen, the film has done enough to make viewers want to know what comes next.

Hope is a good fit for you if you’re looking for a Korean sci-fi film that mixes horror, action, and comedy in an unusual way. But if you can’t stomach gore, you may want to approach this one with caution.
