LayarHijau — A kiss scene lasting about 15 seconds in the Republican-era Chinese drama The Lament of Autumn is generating buzz among Chinese netizens on social media. The drama, starring Cheng Lei and Xu Ruohan, is currently airing on Hunan TV and streaming on Mango TV. Netizens have nicknamed the scene fan mian wen, meaning “the turnover kiss.”
The scene comes from the newlywed storyline of Yu Changxuan, a young marshal played by Cheng Lei, and his wife, Ye Pingjun (Xu Ruohan). Yu Changxuan says, “You sleep, I’ll get on with my work.” His tone is calm and restrained, yet it leaves Ye Pingjun little room to refuse.

He then kisses Ye Pingjun’s arm, moves slowly up to her neck, and finally reaches her lips. Midway through, he turns her over so the two of them are face to face. The entire sequence lasts exactly 15 seconds. Some Chinese netizens say the turn was so smooth that it “doesn’t even look like acting.”
According to Chinese netizens, the scene works because of the shift between the two characters. They go from stiff and passive to face to face in an instant. Yu Changxuan is also seen as compelling because he appears commanding but is actually gentle and restrained. The feelings the two characters have held back for so long break through in a single scene.
Some drama critics and netizens in China say the scene’s strength lies in its camera work and the actors’ precise timing, not in how intimate it is. The camera follows the path of the kiss from arm to neck to lips, as if peeling back the character’s emotions layer by layer. Cheng Lei is credited with showing a Yu Changxuan who appears calm and tender but cannot hide his feelings.
Comments on Weibo have added to the buzz. One user wrote, “Normally I want to skip kiss scenes, but this time I didn’t dare miss a single breath, as if I were sitting on that bed.” Another wrote, “The line ‘You sleep, I’ll get on with my work’ is so tantalizing that my palms were sweating.”
Off screen, during a Weibo livestream with a drama fan group on October 15, Cheng Lei was asked whether he ever truly fell for someone while filming. His ears turned bright red and he covered his face. Xu Ruohan then re-created the chin-lift and nose-tip kiss scene, and the sweet interaction between the two added to the attention on the drama.
The Lament of Autumn is adapted from the novel of the same name by author Lingxi.
