LayarHijau — The anime Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity has officially ended with its final episode (episode 50). The closing episode depicts the world ten years after the final battle. In this epilogue, Ichigo Kurosaki is married to Orihime Inoue and has a son, Kazui Kurosaki, while Rukia Kuchiki is married to Renji Abarai and has a daughter, Ichika Abarai.
One clip from the epilogue has unexpectedly set off heated discussion among fans in the West. In the scene, Ichigo and Rukia talk in front of a house, and Ichigo then puts his hand on Rukia’s shoulder to hold her back. A user on X asked why the two keep touching each other. “You’re both married, what is going on?!” the user wrote.

The post, which questions the boundaries of physical contact between the characters, has drawn more than 3 million views and over 3,000 responses. Some users agreed that Ichigo, who bends down until his face is very close to Rukia’s, was indeed standing too close.
However, far more users called that reading an exaggeration. They mocked it with the line “the idea that grabbing a friend’s shoulder is taboo.” Some said only someone with no friends would see a problem with that kind of contact. Others said their two best friends are a married couple, and they still hug each other warmly.
Users also pointed to details within the scene itself. Renji is standing right next to them. Ichigo is said to have grabbed Rukia because he was stunned by her attitude toward her daughter. In their view, the two characters come across as comrades-in-arms from beginning to end.
Several fans stressed that the two are only friends. One user wrote that from the first chapter of the manga to the end of the story there is no romantic hint between them, and that it would only be suspicious if Ichigo awkwardly pulled his hand back or Rukia pushed him away while blushing.
Longtime fans added context about their ages. When Ichigo met Rukia, he was only 15, while Rukia was a Soul Reaper (shinigami, a “god of death”) who had lived for more than 150 years, which makes her almost an elder figure to him. Ichigo himself had noticed Orihime back in middle school and often blushed around her, so the development of their relationship is seen as natural.
On the other side, some fans who support an Ichigo and Rukia pairing admitted they initially found it hard to accept that the two did not end up together. They said they were finally convinced after watching the scene of Ichigo fighting Grimmjow, when Orihime cried out Ichigo’s name. They also found the backstory of Renji and Rukia, who grew up together as childhood friends before becoming a couple, sweet.
