Director Wuershan has finally provided an update on the progress of the final installment of the Creation of Gods series. While he has not revealed an official release date, he confirmed that the film is still in post-production and that the release schedule will be announced once the production team is ready.
Wuershan shared the update during an interview with CCTV-6 on the sidelines of the 2026 National Film Workers Conference in China on April 16. When asked about the film’s current status, he said, “Creation of Gods III is currently in post-production. As for the release date, we will wait for the official announcement.”

Why Has Creation of Gods III Not Been Released Yet?
The long production timeline of Creation of Gods III has become a major question among fans. Previously, Douglas Hans Smith, the visual effects supervisor for the Creation of Gods trilogy, revealed in an interview in October last year that work on the third film’s visual effects had already begun.
This means the post-production process has been ongoing for months. However, Wuershan has not provided detailed information about which parts of the process are still being completed or when the film will officially be ready for release.
Considering the scale of the project, the lengthy post-production period is not entirely surprising. The Creation of Gods trilogy is an epic fantasy production featuring large-scale battles, mythological creatures, and complex digital environments that require extensive visual effects work. Completing VFX is often one of the most time-consuming stages before a major fantasy film can enter theaters.
One of China’s Biggest Film Projects
The Creation of Gods trilogy began development in 2014. The screenplay development process lasted around four to five years before production officially began.
The trilogy was made with an estimated production investment of around 2.4 billion yuan (approximately US$337 million). Including marketing and distribution costs, the total budget was estimated at around 3 billion yuan (approximately US$421 million), making it one of the largest film projects ever produced in China.
The three films were shot together from August 2018 until production wrapped in January 2020. Instead of releasing all three films at once, the studio chose a gradual release strategy while continuing post-production work, particularly for visual effects.
Did the Reception of the Second Film Affect Creation of Gods III?
Interest in Creation of Gods III has also been influenced by the reception of Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force.
The first film, Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms, was a major success among audiences and critics. The movie received a 7.7 rating on Douban and earned around 2.636 billion yuan (approximately US$370 million) at the Chinese box office.
However, Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force, released during the 2025 Chinese New Year holiday, received a more mixed response. Some viewers criticized aspects of the storyline as well as the quality of certain visual effects. The film ultimately earned around 1.238 billion yuan (approximately US$174 million) at the domestic box office.
Since the entire trilogy had already completed filming in 2020, the existence of Creation of Gods III does not depend on the box office performance of the second film. However, Wuershan and the production team have not officially confirmed whether the response to the second installment affected the final post-production process of the third movie.
Rumors of a 2027 Release Have Circulated
The lack of an official release date has also sparked speculation among fans and entertainment observers in China. Some reports and industry discussions have suggested that Creation of Gods III could potentially be released in 2027 due to the extended post-production period.
Meanwhile, some Chinese financial media outlets have also discussed the financial pressure faced by Beijing Culture, one of the companies behind the trilogy. These discussions have fueled speculation that the completion of the project may require additional time.
However, as of now, there has been no official announcement from Wuershan or Beijing Culture confirming that Creation of Gods III has been delayed until 2027. The production team has also not linked the extended post-production timeline to financial issues or the response to the second film.
Will the Controversy Surrounding One Cast Member Affect the Film?
Apart from questions about the release date, some fans have also wondered whether controversy involving one of the cast members could affect Creation of Gods III.
So far, neither Wuershan nor the production team has released any statement regarding whether the issue will affect the final version of the film. There has also been no official information about reshoots, scene changes, or other adjustments made during post-production.
Zheng He to the Western Seas Project Still Moving Forward
In addition to discussing Creation of Gods III, the 2026 National Film Workers Conference also brought an update on another major project by Wuershan, Zheng He to the Western Seas.
During the event, Huaxia Film General Manager Ren Yue said the company would “make every effort to advance the development of Zheng He to the Western Seas.”
The statement indicated that the project is still receiving support. Previously, speculation had emerged regarding the future of the film following the weaker box office performance of Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force.
Zheng He to the Western Seas was first announced in late 2021 as a fantasy adventure film inspired by the legendary voyages of Chinese explorer Zheng He during the Ming Dynasty. The project was previously expected to begin filming in 2024 and arrive in theaters in 2026, but principal photography has not started yet.
For now, Wuershan’s main focus remains completing Creation of Gods III. While fans continue asking when Creation of Gods III will be released, the director’s latest update remains clear: the film is still in post-production, and the official release date will be announced after the production process is fully completed.
