LayarHijau — A Weibo topic about “the reason for Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo’s divorce” began trending again on October 31, 2026. The topic’s summary states that the cause was a disagreement over family planning: Song Joong-ki wanted to have a child soon, while Song Hye-kyo wanted to wait until the marriage was more stable. The claim is misinformation because it is presented as fact, even though neither of them has made a direct statement saying so.

Before this topic took off, Song Joong-ki had already trended in China and South Korea. On a program, he referred to his second wife, Katie, with the informal word gyae (roughly “she” or “that kid”) while praising her cooking. Korean netizens criticized the word choice as disrespectful toward a spouse. Song Joong-ki married Katie in January 2023, their son was born in June 2023, and their daughter in November 2024.
The same claim actually trended on Weibo once before, in January 2025, under a hashtag saying Song Hye-kyo had discussed her divorce for the first time. Posts at the time claimed she explained it at a promotional event for the film Dark Nuns, and the topic was widely quoted by Chinese media.
The original broadcast was different. Song Hye-kyo appeared on You Quiz on the Block (tvN, January 8, 2025) to promote the film, and she did not mention children. She spoke about the rumors that have followed her. She said she is often asked about them and replies: “I only heard about that too. It might be quicker to ask the person who made up the rumor.”
She also described how she got through that difficult period. Screenwriter Noh Hee-kyung advised her: “You have to learn to put yourself first. By loving yourself, you can give more love to the people around you and see a more beautiful world.” Following that advice, she wrote down her plan for the day every morning and ten things she was grateful for every night for five years, a habit she only stopped last year.
She said she has no regrets about the past. “If it’s mine, it will come to me. If not, let it go to someone else,” she said. “Isn’t that just how life is? I went through that time as valuable training so I could reach the next level.”
The reason for the divorce has never been officially disclosed. In 2019, Song Hye-kyo’s side cited “personality differences,” while Song Joong-ki’s side gave no reason. The court also did not reveal the details of the mediation. Reports of a disagreement over having children have circulated as a rumor since the divorce.
