LayarHijau — The home and workplace of the late Akira Toriyama, creator of the manga Dragon Ball, in Kiyosu, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, is reportedly set to be demolished. The building, known as Bird Studio, has been spotted with scaffolding and protective sheeting going up around it. Toriyama died at age 68 from acute subdural hematoma, and two years have now passed since his death.
According to posts by Japanese netizens on X, a road occupancy permit lists the purpose as erecting scaffolding for the demolition of Bird Studio. The permit is valid from October 21 to November 20, 2026. Other netizens also photographed the building’s exterior, which already had scaffolding and protective sheeting in place.

Toriyama designed Bird Studio himself, and it served as both his home and his workspace for many years. It is where Dragon Ball and many of his other works were created. As of now, there has been no official statement from Toriyama’s family or the Kiyosu city government about the reported demolition.

Over the past two years, many fans had hoped the Kiyosu city government would preserve the studio and turn it into a museum displaying Toriyama’s original manuscripts and other works. That way, future generations could remember the manga master’s creative journey. Many fans have also visited the site in person to pay their respects. If the demolition goes ahead, the building will live on only in fans’ memories.
Some netizens speculated that the building and land are still personally owned by Toriyama’s family and are therefore subject to inheritance tax, suggesting the tax burden forced the family into a painful decision. Japan’s inheritance tax rate reaches up to 55% at the highest bracket. Other netizens said there are many other ways to honor Toriyama besides preserving the building. No party has confirmed the reason for the demolition.
