LayarHijau — As previously reported by LayarHijau, MangoTV opened paid access to the final episode of the drama The Lament of Autumn (玉簟秋) for VVIP users on November 1, 2026. In this episode, Ye Pingjun (Xu Ruohan) manages to escape after killing Jiang Xueting (Liu Dongqin). She then blends in with a crowd of refugees to return to the side of Yu Changxuan (Cheng Lei) and their son. The scene resembles the one in the novel. Yu Changxuan rides a horse past the refugees, while a weakened Ye Pingjun lies on a handcart with her body covered by a makeshift mat. As a result, Yu Changxuan does not recognize her. However, unlike in the novel, Ye Pingjun is still alive this time. She takes shelter in a temple with other refugees.

The two meet again amid the chaos of a city under bombing by Japanese aircraft. In the crowd of panicked residents searching for shelter, Yu Changxuan immediately recognizes his wife. At the Yu family home, Ye Pingjun is finally reunited with her son, who still remembers her as his mother.
The war with Japan grows fiercer, and several territories fall into Japanese hands. Yu Changxuan’s father, Yu Zhongquan (Zhang Fengyi), decides to adopt a defensive strategy to protect his territory. Yu Changxuan believes they should not only defend but also attack. This difference of opinion sparks a sharp conflict between father and son.
Yu Changxuan decides to lead two armies he has trained to launch an offensive while still holding the territory’s fortress. In the end, Yu Zhongquan yields and decides to fight alongside his son. In Wubei, Yu Changxuan meets Xiao Beichen (Shawn Dou). Both are feared warlords in their respective territories, and they decide to unite against the common enemy threatening the fate of their nation.
“We are used to fighting over territory, but now we know where to aim our weapons: at the enemy,” Yu Changxuan says.
Xiao Beichen also reveals that his life was saved by Yu Changxuan’s younger sister, Qixuan, who turns out to be a nurse for the troops. In a flashback, Xiao Beichen is shown lying wounded and being cared for by Qixuan. While checking his uniform, Qixuan finds a photo in his pocket. The person in the photo is not shown, but Qixuan asks whether it is Xiao Beichen’s wife. He nods with a smile and says, “I must make it home alive so I can see her again.”
Meanwhile, the Yu family prepares to flee and dismisses the household servants. On the way, Madam Yu, Ye Pingjun, and Yu Jinxuan (Ye Qing) hear that the family’s servants were ambushed by Japanese soldiers before they could escape. The Japanese soldiers, it turns out, are looking for Madam Yu.
Without the knowledge of Ye Pingjun and Yu Jinxuan, Madam Yu decides to go back. Before leaving, she entrusts a farewell letter for Ye Pingjun to one of the servants who is fleeing with them. Standing before the Japanese commander, she asks for her servants to be released, promising to help persuade her husband and son to surrender.
Madam Yu then asks for permission to enter the ancestral hall to pay respects, escorted by the Japanese commander. But once inside, she takes a firearm kept near the altar table and shoots the commander. The Japanese soldiers return fire. As a final act of resistance, with the doors locked from the outside on her orders, Madam Yu sets the hall on fire, trapping the Japanese soldiers inside.
On the front lines, the battle between Chinese and Japanese forces rages on. Yu Changxuan and Yu Zhongquan personally lead their troops. Yu Zhongquan is among those who fall. Yu Changxuan keeps fighting and suffers multiple stab wounds. As he lies dying, he recalls his first meeting with Ye Pingjun.
“This world is cold and heartless, but you are different,” Ye Pingjun’s voice is heard in Yu Changxuan’s memory of their conversation at the temple.
“You hold power, but it hasn’t changed who you really are. I know who you truly are,” Ye Pingjun continues.
Yu Changxuan’s memory shifts to their wedding day, when Ye Pingjun said she wanted to spend her life with him. Finally, Yu Changxuan breathes his last.
In the closing scene of episode 40, viewers see the women of the Yu family, including Ye Pingjun, going about their days in a modest house while their children play happily. Ye Pingjun, it turns out, spends her time writing anti-Japanese articles to stir up the fighting spirit of the public and the troops. Meanwhile, Yu Jinxuan and Minru help out with logistics.
The ending of The Lament of Autumn became a trending topic on Weibo. Some users commented that they had braced themselves for a sad ending, given that dramas set in the Republican era usually end tragically. However, others expressed disappointment that the male lead dies at the end of the drama. Still others hope Yu Changxuan and Ye Pingjun can live happily in a parallel world.
