According to Hong Kong media outlet Hong Kong 01 (via World Journal), Hamasaki first performed at a restaurant in Wan Chai that night. A regular customer then invited her to perform at a private club in Tsim Sha Tsui. Her manager said her team initially declined because they do not accept private events. However, the organizers repeatedly assured them the event was safe, and the team eventually accepted.
The manager said guests were playing games at the venue. Hamasaki drank a glass of what she believed was a cocktail, served as a penalty drink. She managed to finish her performance but suddenly collapsed afterward. At first, her team thought she was simply exhausted from working two days in a row. Soon after, staff at the venue noticed she was having muscle spasms. When her manager checked on her, her body was rigid and she could barely move.
The manager also said he became suspicious because people at the venue seemed to be passing responsibility to one another, with no one willing to step up. He decided to call the police and take Hamasaki to the hospital.
At around 5 a.m. on November 1 local time, Hamasaki posted on Facebook that she had been secretly given a harmful substance while working. She shared photos of herself in a wheelchair and on an ambulance stretcher. She also expressed disappointment with how her police report was handled, saying officers told her at the time that they were busy. She ended the post with a sarcastic remark that Hong Kong is truly great.
At 8 a.m., the manager gave an update on her condition. Hospital tests showed Hamasaki tested positive for 4 types of substances. She has also experienced hallucinations and must stay in the ICU for close monitoring. The manager stressed that Hamasaki did not take the substances willingly. He suspects she was deliberately set up and has filed a police report.
According to reports, the Hong Kong Police’s serious crime unit has taken over the investigation. Whether the drink was in fact mixed with a substance, the type and source of the substances, and whether the act was deliberate are all pending the outcome of the police investigation. Hamasaki remains in the hospital for treatment. The case has also drawn public attention to the safety of entertainment workers who perform at private events.
