The Original Overdo Novel Isn’t a Love Story—It’s a Harsh Critique of Feudal China

Overview of the Drama Overdo: A Revenge Story Wrapped in Romance

Unlike the novel, which centers on social criticism, Overdo transforms the story into a romantic thriller driven by revenge, political conspiracies, and hidden identities.

Murong Qingyi is no longer portrayed as a privileged man whose choices destroy another person’s life.

Instead, the drama presents him as a victim from the very beginning.

Shortly after birth, Qingyi is separated from his biological family because of an identity swap. Raised by the Li family before eventually discovering his true origins, he grows up burdened by tragedy. He accidentally becomes involved in the death of his biological father, is rejected by his birth mother, and is eventually cast aside by both families.

At one point, he is left homeless and starving until a young Ren Susu rescues him.

That brief encounter becomes the brightest memory of his childhood.

Years later, fate brings them together once again.

Unlike the novel, their relationship develops gradually through mutual affection, allowing viewers to believe they are destined to be together.

Their happiness, however, is short-lived.

Ren Susu Loses Everything

The drama gives Ren Susu a completely different backstory.

She is born into a family of traditional medicine merchants whose lives are destroyed in a brutal massacre connected to powerful elite families.

Afterward, Susu is sent to Ren’ai Orphanage.

Despite its compassionate name, the orphanage is a place of unimaginable cruelty.

Young girls are imprisoned in iron cages, abused for years, and deprived of both freedom and hope.

Behind these atrocities stands Huo Zongqi, the ruthless patriarch of the Huo family.

The horrors Susu experiences there become the driving force behind her determination to seek justice.

The Return of Fang Mulan

One of the drama’s biggest additions is Susu’s second identity.

After faking her death during a shooting aboard a train, she disappears from everyone’s lives.

Three years later, she returns to Shanghai as Fang Mulan, the elegant daughter of a wealthy Southeast Asian businessman.

Under this new identity, she infiltrates elite society while secretly searching for those responsible for her family’s destruction.

She even becomes engaged to Murong Qingyu, Murong Qingyi’s cousin.

The engagement creates one of the drama’s most emotionally charged conflicts, turning former lovers into future in-laws.

Revenge Drives the Story

Unlike the novel, where Susu’s greatest struggle is emotional survival, the drama revolves around her pursuit of revenge.

She sets out to uncover the truth behind her family’s massacre and punish everyone involved.

Her targets include Huo Zongqi and the powerful Huo family, as well as other figures suspected of participating in the conspiracy.

Despite everything, the drama makes it clear that Susu never completely stops loving Qingyi.

Beneath the identity of Fang Mulan, she still treasures the happiest memories they once shared.

On several occasions, she even helps Qingyi from the shadows while carefully protecting her own secret identity.

Qingyi, meanwhile, begins suspecting that the mysterious Fang Mulan may actually be the Ren Susu everyone believes to be dead.

A Completely Different Story

These changes fundamentally reshape the narrative.

While the novel explores how the feudal system slowly destroys ordinary lives from within, the drama expands the story into a sweeping tale of revenge, hidden identities, family conspiracies, political power struggles, and enduring romance.

As a result, both Murong Qingyi and Ren Susu are portrayed as victims of circumstance, encouraging viewers to root for them and hope they can overcome every obstacle standing between them.
