LayarHijau – Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece is once again drawing major attention after its second season achieved a perfect critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. The milestone has helped silence many early doubts about whether such a massive anime franchise could be successfully adapted into a live-action series.
One Piece was created by Eiichiro Oda and first began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1997. Over the years, the pirate adventure story has grown into one of the most influential manga and anime franchises in the world.
The story follows Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate whose dream is to become the Pirate King. To achieve that goal, he sets out to find the legendary treasure known as “One Piece,” which was left behind by Gol D. Roger. Along the journey, Luffy forms a crew of loyal companions—later known as the Straw Hat Pirates—including Roronoa Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji, as they sail through the dangerous waters of the Grand Line.
When the live-action project was first announced by Netflix, many fans questioned whether the platform could faithfully adapt a beloved anime with such a large scope. However, the series has continued to win over audiences and critics.
The show, developed by Steven Maeda and Matt Owens, earned a perfect 100 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes for its second season. For comparison, the first season received an 86 percent critics score and a 95 percent audience score, while season two currently holds 100 percent from critics and 99 percent from viewers.
ScreenRant critic Merlyn De Souza described the series as “a masterclass in live-action adaptation.” Several reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes have also praised the show as one of Netflix’s strongest original productions and a standout example of how shonen manga and anime can be translated into live action.
The franchise’s success was already evident long before the live-action version. The animated series has surpassed 1,000 episodes and remains one of the most widely watched anime worldwide. According to Netflix, more than 1.7 billion hours of the original One Piece anime have been streamed on the platform.
The live-action adaptation also performed strongly upon release, reaching the top of streaming charts in 46 countries.
Season two has sparked additional discussion among fans due to the early appearance of the popular character Bartolomeo. In the original manga and anime by Eiichiro Oda, the character appears much later in the story. His earlier introduction in the Netflix version has led to speculation that the live-action adaptation may reorganize parts of the original timeline.
Meanwhile, Netflix has confirmed that production for the third season is already underway. The main cast—including Iñaki Godoy as Luffy, Mackenyu as Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji—has gathered in Cape Town, South Africa to film the upcoming season.
Season three will also introduce two new cast members: Xolo Maridueña as Portgas D. Ace and Cole Escola as Bentham (Bon Clay).
One Piece season 2 is currently available for streaming on Netflix. Season 3 does not yet have an official release date, but it is expected to premiere sometime in late 2027.
