LayarHijau — The historical drama Rebirth (冰湖重生), starring Li Yunrui and Huangyang Tiantian, aired its final episode on April 24. As a sequel to the hit series Princess Agents (楚乔传), the drama was expected to carry on the epic journey of a slave rising to become a hero. Instead of praise, however, the finale sparked widespread backlash, with viewers criticizing the storyline for straying too far from its original source material, the novel 11 Chu Te Gong Huang Fei (11处特工皇妃).

In the final episode, viewers were presented with an emotional scene as Li Yunrui’s Zhuge Yue rides into the battlefield to save Huangyang Tiantian’s Chu Qiao. The two reunite amid blazing flames in a heartbreaking moment, where the severely injured Chu Qiao collapses in his arms. Unfortunately, this dramatic sequence wasn’t enough to salvage the drama’s reputation. Its Douban score, which was already low at 3.2, dropped further to 3.0, making it one of the lowest-rated Chinese dramas of the year.

The biggest source of disappointment among fans lies in the removal of Chu Qiao’s crucial role as the “Xiuli King.” In the original novel, Chu Qiao is portrayed as a resilient leader who understands the suffering of slaves and leads the Xiuli army to dismantle the oppressive system. She ultimately rules the world alongside Zhuge Yue as a respected leader. In contrast, the drama hints at Chu Qiao’s death on the battlefield or only shows brief flashbacks of her living in isolation in a small town as a housewife. “This change completely erases Chu Qiao’s beliefs and independence, which goes against the very spirit of a protagonist determined to change the slave system,” one loyal reader of the novel complained.

Additionally, the production team cut the reconciliation arc between Chu Qiao and Yan Xun, played by Zhang Kangle. In the novel, there is a key moment where rival factions—including Zhuge Yue and Yan Xun—unite under Chu Qiao’s leadership to fight against a barbarian invasion triggered by Zhao Chun’er’s betrayal, portrayed by Xia Meng. After the war, Zhuge Yue even gives Chu Qiao and Yan Xun space to speak privately and resolve their past grievances. This emotionally resonant narrative, however, was entirely removed from the drama and replaced with scenes of Chu Qiao suffering critical injuries without any meaningful resolution.

Criticism has also intensified over how Chu Qiao’s character was altered. Once known for her independence and strong sense of justice, she is now portrayed as being overly driven by romance. Viewers were frustrated to see a powerful female hero reduced to being caught in a constant emotional dilemma between Zhuge Yue and Yan Xun. “The drama weakens the grand vision and determination Chu Qiao had to create an era of prosperity, as described in the original novel,” another netizen commented, arguing that the adaptation undermined the essence of the story.

Rebirth’s failure to deliver a satisfying ending has inevitably drawn comparisons to its predecessor, Princess Agents, which starred Zhao Liying and Lin Gengxin. While the production attempted to evoke nostalgia, the drastic changes to the storyline were seen as a betrayal of fan expectations. With a messy plot and weak characterization, the drama has now earned a reputation as one of the most criticized Chinese dramas of 2024.
