LayarHijau – The disappearance of Chinese influencer Athena Liya, whose real name is Kong Limei, has taken a disturbing turn following new developments in an investigation into a transnational kidnapping network. Athena is reportedly believed to have been kidnapped and killed in the Philippines after being lured there by a close friend who allegedly helped set her up.
Born in 1995, Athena rose to prominence on Chinese social media and was known for her striking appearance and down-to-earth personality. She also placed third in the 2021 Miss World Macau competition.

Athena disappeared after traveling to Manila in June 2023. For more than three years, her whereabouts remained unknown, while various rumors circulated online about what had happened to her.
One of the most persistent claims was that she had been trafficked to Cambodia and forced to work at a nightclub. Recent developments in the investigation into an international kidnapping ring, however, have brought a different version of events back into focus.
Athena was allegedly lured to Manila by a close friend
Athena reportedly met Li Yifei at a brand event in early 2023. Li allegedly portrayed herself as coming from a wealthy family and gradually gained Athena’s trust through frequent attention and companionship.
The two reportedly became extremely close, even traveling together to London and spending much of their time together.
In late May 2023, Li allegedly told Athena that she was devastated after a breakup and invited her to Manila to take a break and clear her head. Some accounts have also linked the trip to a possible advertising or photo shoot.
Athena initially declined because of her work schedule. After Li repeatedly persuaded her, however, she eventually agreed to make the trip.
Li reportedly gave Athena the impression that she would be traveling with her. On June 16, 2023, Athena flew to Manila alone.
After Athena had already boarded the plane, Li allegedly canceled her own trip, claiming that an unexpected family matter had come up. She reportedly arranged for someone to meet Athena when she arrived in Manila.
According to reports surrounding the investigation, Li’s cancellation was allegedly part of the plan. She is accused of passing Athena’s flight details and personal information to a criminal network operating in the Philippines.
Athena was reportedly kidnapped after landing
After arriving in Manila, Athena was allegedly taken by members of the group and held captive.
Her phone was reportedly confiscated, cutting off her contact with family and friends. The kidnappers then allegedly contacted her family while pretending to act on Athena’s behalf.
They reportedly claimed that she had incurred a large gambling debt at a casino and demanded money to settle it.
Her family reportedly suspected that the story was false but continued trying to raise the money because they feared Athena would be harmed.
The kidnappers allegedly demanded US$800,000 in ransom.
Some reports claim that Athena’s family sold property in China to raise the money. After the ransom was paid, however, the family reportedly received no safe return.
The ransom was paid, but Athena was allegedly killed
According to reports that emerged as investigators began uncovering more details about the criminal network, the kidnappers allegedly killed Athena even after receiving the ransom.
The group reportedly disposed of her body and then attempted to cover up what had happened by spreading false information about her whereabouts.
For years, rumors circulated that Athena had been sold to Cambodia or forced to work in the country’s nightlife industry. Those reports fueled speculation that she had become a victim of human trafficking.
The latest accounts, however, suggest that the Cambodia story may have been deliberately planted to mislead her family and investigators while concealing the fact that she had already been killed.
Investigation into a transnational kidnapping network
The case has resurfaced alongside the investigation into a criminal network allegedly led by Liu Hanwen.
Liu was arrested in the United States and returned to China on July 20, 2026, to face criminal proceedings. Chinese authorities have said the broader investigation involves the kidnapping and killing of Chinese nationals overseas, with law enforcement agencies in several countries involved in the investigation.
The probe has included cooperation between authorities in China, the Philippines, the United States and South Korea.
Another alleged member of the network, Chen Yuxuan, who reportedly also used the alias Li Na, was arrested in South Korea in September 2024, according to reports.
The investigation into the network subsequently led to renewed reports linking the group to Athena’s disappearance in 2023.
However, the confirmed details of Liu’s case should be distinguished from reports about Athena. While Liu’s arrest and return to China have been publicly reported, the specific claims connecting Athena to the network remain part of the ongoing investigation and media reports surrounding the case.
Li Yifei remains at large
Li Yifei has emerged as a central figure in reports about how Athena was allegedly lured into the kidnapping network.
According to those reports, Li built a close friendship with Athena, persuaded her to travel to the Philippines and allegedly provided the kidnappers with information that allowed them to target her.
That would mean Athena was not simply an accidental victim. She was allegedly targeted through someone she trusted.
After Athena disappeared, Li reportedly deleted her social media accounts and vanished from public view.
As of August 2026, reports indicate that she has not been arrested and remains at large.
Her alleged role in the case should still be distinguished from an established criminal conviction. Unless confirmed through official proceedings, claims that Li orchestrated Athena’s kidnapping remain allegations arising from the investigation.
The case has nevertheless drawn attention to the way organized criminal networks can exploit personal relationships to lure victims into dangerous situations.
In Athena’s case, the person who allegedly led her into the trap was not a stranger but someone she had come to regard as a close friend. Her family reportedly paid US$800,000 in ransom, yet Athena never returned home.
The investigation into Liu Hanwen’s network and the search for Li Yifei could shed further light on what happened to Athena and the full extent of the alleged kidnapping operation.
