LayarHijau–The late Jiang Xiaorou became a trending topic on Weibo on August 11 after several hashtags related to her went viral. Some netizens reported that the 1.28-million-follower internet celebrity had died after spending some time in a coma following a car accident.
Some Weibo users subsequently linked Jiang Xiaorou’s death to the type of content she created during her lifetime. On her Douyin account, Jiang Xiaorou was known for creating content that tested superstitions and taboos believed by some people in China.

One of her final videos before the accident has also resurfaced. In the video, Jiang Xiaorou accepted a challenge from viewers during a Douyin livestream to call an international phone number.
According to a story Jiang Xiaorou shared, the number supposedly belonged to a woman who had already died.
It was not clear how the woman had died. However, Jiang Xiaorou said that someone had previously called the number after the woman’s death and heard a female voice screaming for help.
Jiang Xiaorou then asked the person accompanying her to help make the call.
“Help me try it,” Jiang Xiaorou said.
The other person agreed, while hoping that nothing strange would happen.
When the call connected, a voice speaking English could be heard saying, “Can you help me?”
Jiang Xiaorou immediately said that the sound gave her chills and asked the person beside her whether it could be heard clearly.
“Ah, that really gives me chills,” she said.
They then tried calling the number again. This time, however, there was no scream like the one described in the story.
“Wasn’t there supposed to be a woman screaming?” Jiang Xiaorou asked.
After listening to the sound again, they suspected that what they had heard was simply an echo from the phone connection mixed with other background noise.
“Could this just be an echo phone?” Jiang Xiaorou said.
At the time, the call was simply part of a paranormal-themed challenge Jiang Xiaorou took on at the request of her followers.
Jiang Xiaorou’s Final Video Is Now Being Seen as a “Sign”
Jiang Xiaorou was involved in a traffic accident on July 15 while traveling from Guangxi to Guangzhou. She suffered severe injuries and underwent intensive treatment before eventually dying at the age of 24.
After news of her death spread, the phone-call video resurfaced and began circulating widely online. Netizens then started connecting the story about the phone number and the woman who was said to have died with the accident that later happened to Jiang Xiaorou.
The moment when the voice on the phone appeared to repeat Jiang Xiaorou’s own words also attracted attention.
For some netizens, the sequence of events felt like a sign. The hashtag “Jiang Xiaorou and Avoiding Bad Omens” (#姜小柔避谶#) subsequently became a topic of discussion on Weibo.
The phrase refers to the idea of avoiding words or actions believed to foreshadow something bad. Following Jiang Xiaorou’s death, netizens began revisiting some of the things she said and did before the accident.
LayarHijau Investigation
Did the phone number Jiang Xiaorou called really belong to a woman who had died?
To examine the claim, a member of the LayarHijau team called the number shown in the clip from Jiang Xiaorou’s video: +1 (909) 390-0003.
When the call connected, the LayarHijau team heard its own voice played back through the phone connection. The result was similar to what could be heard in Jiang Xiaorou’s video, where her own words were played back moments later.
In other words, the sound heard during the call can be explained as an echo or playback from the phone connection.
LayarHijau then looked further into the number, including whether it had any particular myths or stories attached to it online. During our search, we found a Reddit post from around 13 years ago discussing the same number as an echo line or audio testing number.
A Google search also shows that +1 (909) 390-0003 has appeared on various websites discussing phone numbers considered creepy or frightening to call.
However, the actual explanation for the number is much simpler.
The number +1 (909) 390-0003 is known as an echo line, a service that records a caller’s voice and plays it back automatically after a short delay.
Numbers of this kind are used to test telephone systems, including checking microphone and speaker clarity, measuring audio latency or delay during calls, and making sure voice connections or VoIP networks are working properly.
That means hearing your own voice played back a few moments after speaking into the phone is not unusual. It is precisely what an echo line is designed to do.
This also explains why the voice in Jiang Xiaorou’s video sounded as though someone was responding to or repeating her words.
When LayarHijau called the same number, the result was similar. The team member making the call heard their own voice played back through the connection after a brief delay.
So where did the story that the number belonged to a woman who had died come from?
It is not known exactly where that claim originated. However, LayarHijau’s search found information indicating that the number had been known online as an echo line or audio testing number.
As a result, there is currently no evidence to establish the claim that the number belonged to a woman who had died.
This finding provides a different context for Jiang Xiaorou’s video. Hearing her own voice played back through the phone may have sounded strange or even frightening, especially if she had already heard the story that the number was connected to a deceased woman.
But the sound itself has a plausible technical explanation.
The case also highlights the purpose behind the type of content Jiang Xiaorou created on her Douyin account. She was known for testing superstitions and myths that had spread among the public.
The phone number that some netizens later associated with a supernatural phenomenon appears to have a much simpler purpose: it is an echo line used to test telephone systems.
Although Jiang Xiaorou’s activities during her lifetime sparked controversy, and some netizens later linked her death to “karma” for challenging supernatural beliefs, the investigation into the phone number shows why skepticism is important when dealing with superstitions and mysterious stories circulating online.
In this case, something that sounded frightening appears to have a much simpler explanation.
