LayarHijau – Chinese romance drama Overdo officially premiered on July 19, starring Zhang Linghe and Wang Churan in a sweeping story of love, revenge, and long-buried family secrets.
Adapted from Fei Wo Si Cun’s novel If I Didn’t Meet You at This Second, the drama follows Murong Qingyi (Zhang Linghe), the heir to a powerful family who suffers years of abuse after being switched at birth and raised by the wrong family. During his escape, he is saved by Ren Susu (Wang Churan), the daughter of a medicine merchant. Their fateful meeting, however, ultimately brings tragedy upon her family.

Zhang Linghe Was Drawn to Murong Qingyi’s Emotional Depth
The drama’s trailer has already sparked excitement among fans thanks to the intense chemistry between Zhang Linghe and Wang Churan. One of its most talked-about moments shows Murong Qingyi forcefully kissing Ren Susu, only to be slapped across the face seconds later. The scene is intercut with flashes of their happiest and most painful memories, hinting at the emotional roller coaster awaiting viewers.
Speaking about his role, Zhang Linghe said Murong Qingyi may come across as distant and difficult to approach at first, but there is much more beneath the surface.
“He’s not just stubborn or possessive. He’s deeply loyal, capable of understanding other people’s suffering, and has a gentle side hidden beneath his tough exterior. It’s a character with many layers,” Zhang said.
According to the actor, it is this contrast between strength and vulnerability that makes Murong Qingyi such a compelling character to portray.
Wang Churan Embraced the Challenge of Playing Two Identities
For Wang Churan, the biggest challenge was portraying her character’s dramatic transformation throughout the story.
She first appears as the kind-hearted Ren Susu before returning as Fang Mulan, a woman hiding her true identity while pursuing revenge.
Wang revealed that Fang Mulan’s appearance after her return is her favorite because it perfectly reflects the character’s emotional transformation.
The role also required her to portray a wide range of emotions, from grief and heartbreak to quiet resilience and burning hatred.
“It was an emotional roller coaster. Getting to portray so many emotional changes made the role incredibly rewarding,” she said.
Still, one unexpected challenge always caught her off guard during emotional scenes.
“My nose starts running before I can even cry. I ended up using more tissues than I expected,” Wang joked.
Dance Scenes Put Their Chemistry to the Test
Beyond its emotional romance, Overdo also features a recurring partner dance that plays a key role in the relationship between the two main characters. To prepare for those scenes, the production team brought in a professional dance instructor.
Zhang Linghe revealed that he continued practicing until the very end of filming, hoping every movement would reflect how the characters’ emotions evolved over time.
Wang Churan praised her co-star’s dancing skills, saying Zhang actually danced very well. Even so, the pair occasionally stepped on each other’s feet after missing a beat. Since every dance sequence had to be filmed repeatedly from multiple camera angles, the scenes became a true test of both their stamina and teamwork.
Plenty of Laughter Behind the Scenes
While Overdo tells a heartbreaking love story on screen, the atmosphere behind the cameras was anything but heavy.
Wang Churan revealed that the cast and crew frequently played harmless pranks on one another. She once bought a novelty chewing gum toy that pops out a fake cockroach when opened, intending to scare Zhang Linghe.
Instead, she accidentally held the toy the wrong way, sending the fake cockroach flying toward the director.
“The director jumped and immediately said, ‘You’re so naughty!'” Wang recalled with a laugh.
Blending romance, revenge, mystery, and undeniable chemistry between Zhang Linghe and Wang Churan, Overdo is one of the most anticipated Chinese dramas premiering this July.
