LayarHijau – Overdo (这一秒过火), the highly anticipated romance drama starring Zhang Linghe and Wang Churan, got off to a remarkable start, racking up a string of impressive achievements on its premiere day. Even before its debut, the series had already generated 120 million yuan (approximately US$16.7 million) in sponsorship revenue, making it one of the most commercially successful Chinese dramas ahead of release this year.

Before its premiere, Overdo surpassed 10 million reservations and secured partnerships with more than 20 brands. The strong star power of Zhang Linghe and Wang Churan was widely credited as a key factor in attracting advertisers well before the drama aired.

A day before the premiere, several major Chinese stars joined a cloud screening campaign to promote the drama, including Dilraba Dilmurat, Liu Yuning, Meng Ziyi, Li Yitong, Jin Jing, Zhou Keyu, Bai Yu, Joseph Zeng, Lin Yun, Xin Yunlai, and Deng Kai.

The campaign attracted more than 200,000 virtual seat bookings, roughly double the figure recorded by Zhang Linghe’s previous drama, Pursuit of Jade (逐玉).

Overdo premiered with its first five episodes and quickly proved that the pre-release buzz was well deserved. Within hours of its debut, the drama climbed to No. 1 on Maoyan’s Chinese drama popularity chart, outperforming other currently airing titles, including Blossoms of Power (百花杀), Love for You (野狗骨头), Key to the Phoenix Heart (雀骨), The Eternal Fragrance (千香), and Road to Success (灿如繁星).

The drama also posted strong opening numbers across both of its streaming platforms, iQIYI and Tencent Video.

On iQIYI, Overdo surpassed a popularity index of 6,500 on its first day and continued climbing. It also secured eight brand sponsors, topped the platform’s Hot Search and Most Anticipated rankings, and saw both lead characters—Ren Susu, played by Wang Churan, and Murong Qingyi, played by Zhang Linghe—surpass 100 million in character popularity indexes shortly after the premiere.

Meanwhile, on Tencent Video, the drama exceeded a 22,000 popularity index, attracted nine brand sponsors, and claimed the top spot on the platform’s Fastest Rising chart.

Amid the drama’s strong debut, one name on the cloud screening supporter list also caught fans’ attention: Lu Yuxiao.

Lu has recently been rumored to reunite with Zhang Linghe in the upcoming historical drama Ci Tang (刺棠). However, the reported pairing has sparked backlash from some of Zhang Linghe’s fans, who questioned whether Lu was the right choice for the female lead.

Despite the controversy, Lu still showed her support for Overdo by purchasing virtual screening seats, drawing mixed reactions online. While some fans dismissed the move as a routine gesture between artists from the same agency, others argued that Lu had become an unfair target of criticism.

In fact, the two actors have a history of supporting each other’s projects. Zhang Linghe previously promoted Lu Yuxiao’s Love in the Clouds (入青云) through a similar campaign, while Lu also backed Zhang’s Our Generation (樱桃琥珀). Their long-standing mutual support led many netizens to view Lu’s latest gesture as nothing out of the ordinary rather than a publicity stunt.
