LayarHijau — The morning after the wedding night of Lu Zhuo (Yan An) and Wei Rao (Tian Xiwei) in the period drama Where the Mask Ends (嫁金钗) is being called the sweetest scene by netizens. According to Taiwanese media, the scene left a stronger impression than the wedding night itself, because the once-cold Lu Zhuo turns into an attentive husband who looks after his wife. Netizens commented, “This is how love should be!”
Wei Rao initially married in place of another bride, in a marriage meant to bring good fortune to the groom. At the start of the marriage, she and Lu Zhuo were husband and wife in name only. When they divorced amicably, Wei Rao said publicly, “We never truly became husband and wife, so we can’t be considered a real couple.” Lu Zhuo signed the divorce papers to the point of vomiting blood, without saying a word.

After spending some time trying to win Wei Rao’s love but being toyed with again and again, Lu Zhuo finally won her back. The turning point in their relationship came during a snowfall and a solar eclipse. Wei Rao took a carriage to visit Grandmother Wei. Along the way, she saw Lu Zhuo ride past on horseback. Because she was in an ordinary carriage, Lu Zhuo did not recognize her and rode on. When the solar eclipse occurred, people nearby panicked, believing it was an omen of disaster. Wei Rao instead got out of the carriage to look for Lu Zhuo. She worried that if the sun vanished forever and the world was destroyed, she would never have another chance to see him.
The story then skips ahead to the procession in which the groom brings the bride home. On the night of the remarriage, the two wore red in the bridal chamber. Lu Zhuo took out a painted scroll that he had kept carefully. The scroll is a guide to marital intimacy, including positions, traditionally given to a bride-to-be by her mother, grandmother, or aunt in preparation for marriage. Wei Rao, both embarrassed and annoyed, tried to snatch it away. The moment finally arrived after viewers had waited a long time for it. Lu Zhuo’s earlier words, “We were married before the altar and the ancestors, and you are my lawful wife,” proved to be more than mere words.
Netizens had assumed Lu Zhuo’s coldness was simply part of his character. But the next morning, he brought water for Wei Rao to wash her face, stroked her ear, and kissed her cheek. He said, “The maids are too slow; let me attend to the Princess myself.” He then carried a still half-asleep Wei Rao, blanket and all, to the dressing table. Throughout the scene, he spoke gently and never left her side.
Lu Zhuo’s clinginess was seen as not out of character. His distance and his words that contradicted his true feelings had been shown bit by bit from the start, so the release of long-suppressed emotion felt natural. Wei Rao also no longer used the line “we never truly became husband and wife” as a weapon to hurt each other, and accepted her husband’s closeness with an open heart. Their small gestures and everyday interactions were seen as more touching than forced romance.
Lu Zhuo did not stick close only in the morning. He kept Wei Rao company on the swing and handled matters involving her nanny. He was sent off to the study at one point, but soon came back. By staying by her side all morning, he kept the promise he made in the bridal chamber: “From now on, I will shield you from whatever storm comes.”
From the divorce and the moments amid the snow and the eclipse to a remarriage between equals, the sweetness viewers had waited more than ten episodes for was “paid off” in a single day. Netizens commented, “This wait was absolutely worth it!”
