Behind the intense political intrigue, the set was filled with laughter. In a recent joint interview, Meng Ziyi and He Yu shared the story behind Xiao Huayong’s hilarious clingy moments as he pretends to be sick to get closer to Shen Xihe. According to Meng Ziyi, He Yu became so immersed in those scenes that the director eventually couldn’t take it anymore and cut several of them from the final version.
Meng Ziyi plays Shen Xihe, a gifted perfumer blessed with an extraordinary sense of smell. Calm, decisive, and fiercely independent, Shen Xihe never allows herself to be pushed around and always stays one step ahead.
The actress described Shen Xihe as the most satisfying role she has ever played.
“This is the most enjoyable character I’ve ever portrayed,” Meng Ziyi said.
In the latest episodes, Shen Xihe uncovers the true identity of Crown Prince Xiao Huayong, played by He Yu, simply through his scent. She realizes that the seemingly frail prince who is constantly pretending to be ill is actually a powerful mastermind secretly pulling the strings behind the imperial court. Fearing she could become another pawn in his schemes, Shen Xihe decisively calls off their engagement.
During the interview, He Yu admitted that his favorite scenes to film were those in which Xiao Huayong pretends to be sick while acting spoiled around Shen Xihe.
“I’m actually very healthy and physically strong. This is the first time I’ve played a character who constantly pretends to be weak and acts spoiled to win over the woman he loves,” He Yu said with a laugh.
Meng Ziyi then shared a funny behind-the-scenes story.
According to her, He Yu filmed far more scenes of his character acting spoiled than audiences eventually saw. His performance became so over-the-top that the director finally decided enough was enough and cut several scenes from the final edit.
“Even the director couldn’t take it anymore, so some of those scenes had to be cut,” Meng Ziyi joked.
He Yu explained that all of Xiao Huayong’s clingy behavior had one purpose—to win Shen Xihe’s heart.
Their chemistry extends beyond the screen as well. Meng Ziyi revealed that their reunion in Blossoms of Power began with a trending online search.
She said she accepted the project first, then noticed the keyword “Meng Ziyi and He Yu second collaboration” trending online. She suggested that the production team check He Yu’s availability, and everything fell into place. Blossoms of Power marks their second project together after previously appearing in The Legend of Heroes: Nine Yin True Sutra.
Meng Ziyi also teased her co-star by saying that both times they have worked together, He Yu has played a character who falls in love with hers.
“We’ve worked together twice, and both times He Yu’s character falls in love with mine at first sight,” she joked.
He Yu immediately replied with a smile:
“That just proves you’re beautiful.”
While preparing for the drama, He Yu also accompanied Meng Ziyi as she practiced perfume-making techniques for her role. Although he joked that he never really figured it out despite spending plenty of time learning, the experience helped build the natural chemistry viewers now see on screen.
The drama also features a fun hidden surprise. Meng Ziyi’s pet dog, Chocolate, makes a special cameo appearance. In one of the later scenes, after Shen Xihe rises to the highest position, the swaddled “baby” she is holding is actually Chocolate wrapped in a blanket.
When asked whether Chocolate was paid for the cameo, Meng Ziyi laughed and said the dog didn’t receive a single cent.
“Not at all.”
She jokingly added that since it’s summer vacation, she bought Chocolate the largest-capacity tablet available and “allowed” the dog to watch Blossoms of Power for two hours every day as compensation, bringing the interview to a lighthearted close.
