LayarHijau — The epic period drama Tigers Sniff the Rose (尚公主) officially premiered on Friday night (Oct. 23). Starring Meng Ziyi and Li Yunrui, the two leads of Blossom (九重紫), the series immediately topped the trending search list. After the first four episodes were released, however, viewer reactions to the storyline and the main characters have been sharply divided.
According to data circulating online, the drama’s popularity index on its streaming platform passed 20,000 just 10 minutes after the premiere. It climbed to 24,000 within two hours, and the first-day peak reached 24,971. That puts Tigers Sniff the Rose among the top-performing dramas premiering in 2026 on the platform. It also rose to the top of Maoyan’s drama popularity chart.

Its commercial appeal has drawn attention as well. In just its first four episodes, the drama landed 24 advertisers. Tmall even signed on as the title sponsor across platforms.
Support also poured in from the cast’s circle of friends. More than 30 fellow entertainers, including Yang Yang and Joseph Zeng, posted messages backing the drama.
On the other hand, the opening scenes sparked debate. In the first episode, Mu Wanyao, the character played by Meng Ziyi, is shown dragging Yan Shang’s father and wrecking the Yan family home. Some netizens called her behavior arrogant and likened it to that of a high-handed aristocrat, saying it put them off continuing to watch. Some viewers also felt the first three episodes moved slowly, with a lot of slow-motion shots. Fans of the original novel also have mixed opinions about how much the adaptation changes.
Even so, supporters have given the drama high marks. They say the battle of wits between Meng Ziyi and Li Yunrui crackles with energy, and they consider the on-location filming and the quality of the costumes, makeup, and props to be strong. Some fans say Mu Wanyao’s spoiled streak early in the story was set up deliberately to leave room for the political intrigue and for character growth later on.
As the fourth episode shifts the main storyline to Sheng’an and the political intrigue fully unfolds, the pacing is said to be improving. Viewers and the Chinese entertainment industry are now watching to see whether Tigers Sniff the Rose can turn opinion around and last on the strength of word of mouth.
