Xiao Huayong’s Sacrifice Ends in a Heartbreaking Farewell
Episodes 32 through 36 revolve around a palace coup that throws the imperial court into chaos. Crown Prince Xiao Huayong (He Yu) is gravely wounded during the conflict. While protecting his wife, Shen Xihe (Meng Ziyi), he suffers another fatal sword strike.
The couple collapses into the snow as Shen Xihe watches helplessly while Xiao Huayong coughs up blood and appears to breathe his last. Too weak to move, she can only lie beside him and break down in tears. The devastating farewell quickly became one of the drama’s most emotional scenes, leaving many viewers in tears alongside the heroine.
Despite losing the man she loves, Shen Xihe forces herself to stay strong for the sake of the child she is carrying.
Xiao Changqing’s Sacrifice Brings Closure to Their Past-Life Romance
As the political turmoil continues, Prince Xin Xiao Changqing (Jeremy Xu/Xu Zhengxi) launches a rebellion. However, his goal is never to seize the throne for himself.
Before his death, it is revealed that Xiao Changqing deliberately risks his life so Shen Xihe and her unborn son can ascend the throne without opposition. His sacrifice clears the final obstacles standing in their way.
Xiao Changqing ultimately dies in Shen Xihe’s arms. She later reveals that the rebellion led by her husband from their previous life was his final act to pave the way for her and their son to inherit the throne safely. With his death, the tragic love story they shared across their previous lifetime finally comes to an end.
Shen Xihe Becomes the Empress Dowager
After the conflict is over, Shen Xihe becomes the Empress Dowager, while her son ascends the throne as emperor.
Under their rule, the empire enjoys peace and stability. Even so, Shen Xihe never truly moves on from Xiao Huayong.
Night after night, she finds herself thinking about him and even dreams of the three of them living happily together as a family. Those dreams only deepen the loneliness she carries in reality.
Xiao Huayong Returns Four Years Later
Four years later, Shen Xihe suddenly catches the familiar fragrance that she always associated with Xiao Huayong. Following the scent, she eventually finds a man with streaks of gray hair standing beneath a tree.
The man is Xiao Huayong.
It turns out he never truly died during the palace coup. His severe injuries and poisoning left him on the brink of death countless times, and he spent four years recovering. Throughout that ordeal, his determination to reunite with Shen Xihe kept him alive.
In the final scene, the two meet beneath the tree, their eyes filled with tears before embracing each other tightly. The long-awaited reunion became one of the finale’s most memorable moments and moved countless viewers.
Happy Ending Wins Praise but Storytelling Draws Criticism
Although Shen Xihe and Xiao Huayong eventually reunite, Blossoms of Power’s ending sparked mixed reactions among Chinese viewers.
Many praised the emotional reunion as a satisfying conclusion after everything the couple had endured. Others, however, argued that Shen Xihe and her son’s successful rise to power depended almost entirely on the sacrifices of the two men who loved her. They pointed to Xiao Huayong’s apparent death and eventual survival, as well as Xiao Changqing’s willingness to sacrifice himself to secure the throne for Shen Xihe and her son.
The drama’s political storyline also received criticism. While the final episodes focused heavily on court intrigue and the struggle for the throne, many viewers felt the political schemes were too simplistic and lacked the complexity expected from a story centered on power struggles. As a result, some believed the drama failed to fully capitalize on its potential despite delivering an emotionally satisfying ending for the main couple.
