The changes have been widely praised by viewers, many of whom believe the drama’s ending delivers greater emotional impact while strengthening the tragic romance between Shen Xihe and Xiao Changqing across two lifetimes.
In the final episodes, Crown Prince Xiao Huayong (He Yu) and Shen Xihe (Meng Ziyi) are forced to endure a heartbreaking separation. Shen Xihe later becomes the Empress Dowager, while their son, Chen Yujin, ascends the throne. Four years later, Xiao Huayong finally returns to reunite with his wife and son, giving the drama a heartwarming conclusion that earned praise from audiences.
Meanwhile, Prince Xin Xiao Changqing (Jeremy Xu) continues his rebellion, unable to let go of his feelings for Shen Xihe from their previous life. In the end, he dies in Shen Xihe’s arms.
Before his death, Shen Xihe reveals that she understands the true purpose behind Xiao Changqing’s rebellion. She realizes that his actions were never simply about seizing the throne but about ensuring that Shen Xihe and her son could secure their positions without future threats. Xiao Changqing willingly sacrifices his life to pave the way for them, making the scene one of the most emotional moments of the entire series.
The drama’s ending, however, differs significantly from the original novel, After My Flowers Bloom, Hundreds of Flowers Die (我花開後百花殺) by Jin Huang.
In the novel, Xiao Changqing survives. After overcoming his obsession with Shen Xihe, he chooses to let go of his feelings and eventually becomes the Grand Tutor to the young Emperor Chen Yujin.
Instead, the character who dies in the novel is Prince Lie Xiao Changying, portrayed by Lai Weiming in the drama. Xiao Changying sacrifices himself to stop the ambitions of his older brother, Xiao Changqing. The younger brother’s sacrifice ultimately awakens Xiao Changqing, leading him to abandon his ambitions and devote himself to serving as the young emperor’s Grand Tutor.
Although many viewers were heartbroken by Xiao Changqing’s death in the drama, the change has been met with overwhelmingly positive reactions. Fans believe the tragic ending better fits Xiao Changqing’s stubborn yet unwavering devotion to Shen Xihe. His sacrifice also deepens the emotional weight of their love story spanning two lifetimes, making it even more poignant than in the original novel.
Beyond the altered ending, Blossoms of Power also enjoyed a noticeable boost in reputation during its final week. The drama had previously slipped to second place after Overdo (这一秒过火), starring Zhang Linghe and Wang Churan, claimed the top spot following its premiere.
However, as Blossoms of Power approached its finale, audience reception continued to improve. Many Chinese netizens praised the series for its casting, storytelling, and cinematography. They also felt that changing Xiao Changqing’s fate made the finale far more emotionally compelling. As a result, many viewers concluded that Blossoms of Power finished its run with stronger word of mouth than Overdo.
