LayarHijau.com – Ten years ago, a computer science graduate named Eric Barone set out on a journey no one could have predicted, leaving behind the corporate grind to create a game that would captivate millions worldwide. Stardew Valley, a 2D pixel-art farming simulator, has just celebrated its 10th anniversary and has sold nearly 50 million copies, ranking among the best-selling video games of all time.
Barone, known as ConcernedApe, developed Stardew Valley entirely on his own after college. Inspired by the classic 1990s farming RPG Harvest Moon, he taught himself pixel art and game design over nearly five years before releasing version 1.0 for PC. Today, updates are available for consoles and mobile, including the recently announced seventh major update.
“Stardew Valley has been popular beyond my wildest dreams. It completely changed my life,” Barone said from his Seattle office. “I was not expecting at all for the game to take off. I thought it would maybe sell a handful of copies to a very niche market.”
Life in Pelican Town
In Stardew Valley, players can enjoy a colorful village life: tending seasonal crops, caring for animals like pigs and ducks, crafting natural wine, and romancing the local townspeople. Each day in Pelican Town flies by — managing the farm, attending happy hour, exploring underground caves, and returning to your virtual spouse after midnight.
The game isn’t just relaxing; it’s emotionally rich. Villagers have their own stories, from sweet romances to touching moments, including redemption arcs like Shane, the town alcoholic who finds happiness raising chickens. Barone’s own music score enhances the experience, with arrangements tailored to each season and location, making every session feel alive.
Community and Cultural Impact
Stardew Valley is also known for its warm, supportive community. Players enthusiastically share their farm designs and pixel art on Twitch, Discord, Pinterest, YouTube, and Reddit, offering encouragement even while works are still in progress. Celebrities like Kat Dennings and comedian Bobby Lee have expressed their love for the game, with Dennings naming her chickens after the Golden Girls and linking the game to her real-life gardening hobby.
Barone has also seen his music appreciated worldwide through two global orchestra tours performing the Stardew Valley soundtrack. “Seeing people listen to my music and enjoy it is one of my dreams come true,” he said.
Future Updates and New Adventures
Over 10 years, Stardew Valley has continuously expanded. Recent updates added new characters, exploration areas, and small details like ducks that can swim in ponds. Barone hasn’t ruled out further content, though he acknowledges there’s a limit to what one game can hold.
Barone is also developing a new project, Haunted Chocolatier, where players run a chocolate business from a haunted house in another pixel-art town. While there’s no official release date yet, the creative freedom he enjoys promises another enchanting experience.
The 10-year journey of Stardew Valley shows how one person’s vision can grow into a global phenomenon that unites players, sparks creativity, and offers both entertainment and solace. From pixel farms to orchestral concerts, Stardew Valley proves that simplicity, emotion, and a welcoming community can leave an extraordinary legacy in the world of gaming.
