Song Weilong has been active in the entertainment industry for around a decade. Before officially debuting as an actor, he gained attention by uploading videos on the Kuaishou platform and working as a Taobao model. Standing at approximately 185 cm with striking visuals, he was later discovered by producer Yu Zheng and officially signed with Huanyu Film & Television in October 2015 under a long-term contract.
Soon after his debut, Song Weilong was given numerous opportunities as a leading man. He starred in popular dramas such as Find Yourself (下一站是幸福), In a Class of Her Own (漂亮书生), and Go Ahead (以家人之名). His popularity peaked in 2020 with Go Ahead, which became a major hit and brought him widespread recognition.
Despite his rising fame, Song Weilong gradually became dissatisfied with the types of roles offered to him. He felt that the characters and genres were repetitive and did not align with the direction he envisioned for his career. In 2021, he requested to terminate his contract with Huanyu, a move that would later lead to a prolonged conflict.
Following the dispute, Song Weilong reportedly experienced months without work and was sued by the agency for breach of contract, with compensation claims amounting to 5 million yuan. The conflict escalated into a legal battle, and during the court proceedings, Song Weilong did not take on any new drama projects. As a result, after the massive success of Go Ahead, he released no new works throughout 2021 and 2022, creating a noticeable gap in his career.
Amid public speculation that he had been “shelved” by his agency, Yu Zheng denied the accusations, stating that acting offers were still presented to Song Weilong but were turned down by the actor himself. With both sides offering different accounts, the truth behind the situation remains unclear.
In 2023, Song Weilong ultimately won the lawsuit and officially parted ways with Huanyu Film & Television. He then established his own personal studio and quickly returned to an active working schedule. Within approximately two and a half years, Song Weilong completed six drama projects, including Everlasting Longing (相思令) alongside Angelababy, Youthful Glory (韶华若锦), The Seven Relics of Ill Omen (七根心简), and the currently airing and widely discussed Shine on Me.
In addition, he has several upcoming projects awaiting release, such as The Eternal Fragrance (千香引) and Love for You (野狗骨头). His sharp increase in productivity after resolving the contract dispute has led many fans to view this period as a major turning point in his career.
Now, with his portrayal of Lin Yusen in Shine on Me, Song Weilong has reached a new peak in popularity. For many fans, his recent success feels especially meaningful, as it comes after years of uncertainty and hardship. After a two-year hiatus caused by conflict with his former agency, Song Weilong has finally made a strong comeback, reaffirming his position as a top-tier leading actor in Chinese dramas.
