The production has also released character concept posters and a concept video. Based on the early promotional materials, Revenge appears to have an impressive production quality and has already generated anticipation among viewers.
In addition to Zhang Linghe and Lu Yuxiao, the drama features Wang Hongyi, Sun Zhenni, Liu Mengrui, Li Qing, He Landou, Gao Hanyu, Liang Jie, An Yuexi, and many other well-known actors.
The cast is particularly notable for its lineup of male actors. Besides Zhang Linghe, Revenge has eight male supporting actors, each bringing previous experience from popular Chinese dramas.
Zhang Linghe Plays Two Sides of Song Ling
Zhang Linghe is already one of the most popular actors of the post-1995 generation. Along with his acting experience, his appearance has also become one of the reasons he is frequently cast in costume dramas.
At around 190 centimeters tall, Zhang Linghe is known for his sharp facial features and strong screen presence. He has also played various types of characters, from cold and reserved figures to powerful characters with darker sides.
In Revenge, Zhang Linghe portrays two sides of the same character. In the early part of the story, Song Ling is a gentle crown prince and Su Luowei’s fiancé. After suffering a tragedy and undergoing a change of appearance, he returns under the identity of Ye Tingyan, a powerful official with a much more calculating personality.
The concept materials released so far show Zhang Linghe in several different looks, including white, black, and red costumes. The contrasting styles further highlight the differences between Song Ling and Ye Tingyan.
1. Wang Hongyi as Song Ling
Wang Hongyi plays Song Ling, the crown prince before the tragedy that changes his life. He is also Su Luowei’s former fiancé.
Although his screen time is not as extensive as that of the main characters after the central conflict unfolds, Song Ling holds an important place in the story because he remains a figure in Su Luowei’s memories.
The role also fits Wang Hongyi’s established image in costume dramas, where his refined appearance and dignified screen presence have made him a recognizable supporting actor.
Wang Hongyi rose to wider prominence after playing Chishui Fenglong in Lost You Forever (长相思). The role boosted his popularity and led to more supporting roles in high-profile dramas.
2. Li Qing as Song Lan
Li Qing plays Song Lan, Song Ling’s half-brother, who initially appears to be a mild and overlooked member of the royal family.
Behind that seemingly harmless exterior, however, Song Lan is deeply ambitious. He plots Song Ling’s assassination, seizes the throne, and becomes one of the key figures driving the revenge storyline in Revenge.
Li Qing previously worked with Zhang Linghe in Pursuit of Jade (逐玉). Zhang Linghe played Xie Zheng in the drama, while Li Qing portrayed the strategist Gongsun Jin. Their characters were close friends in that story.
They are now reunited in a very different dynamic. From close friends in Pursuit of Jade, Zhang Linghe and Li Qing become enemies in Revenge, with Zhang playing Ye Tingyan and Li portraying Song Lan.
3. Tong Mengshi as Yan Lang
Tong Mengshi plays Yan Lang. Not much information about the character has been revealed by the production team so far.
However, Tong Mengshi has extensive experience in costume dramas. One of his best-known roles is Wuzhu in Joy of Life (庆余年), the mysterious character who always covers his eyes and became one of the drama’s most memorable figures.
In recent years, Tong Mengshi has also appeared in Flourished Peony (国色芳华), The Journey of Legend (赴山海), Sword and Beloved (天地剑心), and The Vendetta of An (长安二十四计).
With that background, his role as Yan Lang is another supporting character worth watching in Revenge.
4. Gao Hanyu as Chang Zhao
Gao Hanyu plays Chang Zhao. The role is one of his relatively few costume-drama projects in recent years.
Although Gao Hanyu remains a popular entertainer, much of his recent work has focused on variety and reality shows rather than scripted dramas.
One of his more memorable costume-drama roles was Xuan Yuan Po in Fighter of the Destiny (择天记). While the character’s appearance was not necessarily the type that immediately dazzled viewers, his personality made him a well-liked character.
Gao Hanyu will now take on Chang Zhao in Revenge, giving viewers a chance to see another side of him in a costume setting.
5. Ding Jiawen as Bai Sensen
Ding Jiawen plays Bai Sensen, a wandering physician with a relaxed and humorous personality. He is also known as “Bai Yiguan,” or “Doctor Bai.”
The casting has reportedly been well received by readers of the original novel, as Ding Jiawen is considered a good fit for the character thanks to his appearance, screen presence, and acting ability.
Ding Jiawen previously played Ruo Shou in Lost You Forever (长相思), Guo Junchao in The Hive (蜂巢), Cui Bei in White Cat Legend (大理寺少卿游), the Da Zhao emperor in The Double (墨雨云间), and Song Shilan in Fight for Love (山河枕).
These roles also show his experience playing characters with very different personalities.
6. Sun Zeyuan as Yuan Ming
Sun Zeyuan plays Yuan Ming in Revenge. Not much information about the character has been revealed so far.
However, Sun Zeyuan has attracted attention for his previous costume-drama roles. This year, he played Lin Muhan in the fantasy costume drama Fate Chooses You (佳偶天成), which brought him renewed attention.
He has also appeared in Dashing Youth (少年白马醉春风), Melody of Golden Age (长乐曲), I Am Nobody (异人之下), and Exorcist Chef (御妖厨娘).
His previous experience makes his portrayal of Yuan Ming another performance to watch.
7. Zhang Yao as Yu Sui’ou
Zhang Yao plays Yu Sui’ou, another character attracting attention in the cast of Revenge.
Zhang Yao first gained widespread recognition through the youth drama When We Were Young (人不彪悍枉少年), in which he played Li Yu.
He later starred in dramas including Love in Between (少年游之一寸相思), Cocoon (破茧), and The Story of the Bat (夜燕白).
In recent years, as the long-form drama market has become increasingly competitive, Zhang Yao has also taken more supporting and special-appearance roles in popular dramas. This has allowed him to remain active on screen and maintain his visibility in the industry.
8. Zeng Kelong as Pei Xi
Zeng Kelong plays Pei Xi, one of the important characters in Revenge.
Some viewers may not immediately recognize his name, but he previously attracted attention as Lu Di in the time-loop drama Reset (开端).
In the drama, Lu Di was known for his long and eccentric nickname and quirky personality. The character became one of Zeng Kelong’s standout roles.
He later appeared in several dramas, including Under the Skin (猎罪图鉴), A Journey to Love (一念关山), The Double (墨雨云间), and Jade’s Fateful Love (玉茗茶骨).
With experience in both modern and costume dramas, Zeng Kelong now gets the opportunity to bring a new side of himself to the role of Pei Xi.
A Strong Supporting Cast Adds to Revenge’s Appeal
The cast of Revenge shows that the drama is not relying solely on Zhang Linghe and Lu Yuxiao. Its eight male supporting actors also bring experience from a wide range of popular Chinese dramas.
Wang Hongyi, Li Qing, Tong Mengshi, Gao Hanyu, Ding Jiawen, Sun Zeyuan, Zhang Yao, and Zeng Kelong each bring different characters and acting experience to the production.
Several of the character relationships are also expected to play an important role in the story. Wang Hongyi appears as Song Ling in the early part of the story, while Zhang Linghe later portrays the same character after his transformation and return under the identity of Ye Tingyan. Meanwhile, Li Qing’s Song Lan is directly connected to the tragedy that befalls Song Ling.
With filming officially beginning in Hengdian on September 12, 2026, Revenge has now entered production. Its revenge storyline, political intrigue, and strong lineup of lead and supporting actors make it one of the upcoming Chinese costume dramas worth watching.
