LayarHijau–Overdo, starring Zhang Linghe and Wang Churan, officially aired its final episode on August 5, 2026. The drama’s ending left many viewers in China heartbroken over the tragic fate of Murong Qingyi, played by Zhang Linghe.

Following the death of Li Boze (Xu Zhenxuan), Ren Susu (Wang Churan) and Murong Qingyi finally reconcile. Ren Susu even talks about her dream of growing old with Qingyi and being buried in the place he once showed her.
Murong Qingyi wants Ren Susu to take their son somewhere safe. However, she has already arranged for their son to be evacuated before he even asks. Instead of leaving with him, Ren Susu chooses to stay behind and fight alongside Qingyi.
To stop Zhang Mingshu’s (Lu Qi) plan, Ren Susu and Murong Qingyi split their forces into two groups to guard the two locations where Zhang Mingshu and his followers are expected to spread the deadly Red Pill poison.
The two teams engage in a fierce battle against Zhang Mingshu’s men. Ren Susu is stabbed in the chest while trying to stop one of Zhang Mingshu’s followers from poisoning the water supply. Fortunately, she survives after one of her allies shoots the attacker with a sniper rifle.
Meanwhile, Murong Qingyi fights Zhang Mingshu in a life-or-death battle. During the confrontation, Zhang Mingshu openly admits to the crimes committed by the Zhang family to turn the Murong and Li families against each other. He also reveals that he was directly and indirectly responsible for the deaths of Murong Qingyu and Li Boze.
In the final battle, Murong Qingyi is critically wounded after Zhang Mingshu impales him with an iron stake. Even so, Qingyi manages to ensure that Zhang Mingshu dies alongside him.
Ren Susu and her team successfully neutralize the poison. When she arrives at the place where she and Qingyi agreed to meet after completing their mission, he is nowhere to be found. Instead, a young girl hands her a farewell letter that Qingyi left behind.
In the letter, Qingyi writes:
“Susu, we walked through blazing fire and turned it into sparks instead of ashes. If I leave this time and never return, you must live well. Live for yourself.”
As he approaches the end of his life, Murong Qingyi remembers the family members and friends who sacrificed themselves before him. He then imagines how different life could have been if everything had started over.
Viewers are then shown an alternate reality where Murong Qingyu’s wedding goes ahead without tragedy. Murong Qingyi and Ren Susu, as well as Li Boze and Hai Tangqing, are happily together. Their mother, Cheng Jingzhi, no longer lives with resentment toward Qingyi.
In this alternate world, Qingyi and Boze even compete to catch the wedding bouquet. Qingyi later takes Ren Susu away and proposes to her, allowing their love story to end with the marriage they had always dreamed of.
The official ending of Overdo sees the two Murong brothers, Murong Qingyi and Murong Qingyu, as well as Li Boze, lose their lives under different circumstances. In the end, Ren Susu is the only one left behind. The tragic ending broke the hearts of many viewers in China, while Qingyi’s imagined alternate ending in his final moments left audiences with a bittersweet feeling.
“It hurts so much. It’s so heartbreaking. Murong Qingyi’s life was unbelievably tragic,” one Weibo user wrote.
Another viewer admitted they still could not accept the ending and hoped Zhang Linghe and Wang Churan would reunite in another project.
“You two need to work together again with a great production team, a great cast, a great script, and a genuinely sweet modern romance drama. Please!” the comment read.
Another viewer said they had believed from the very beginning that the drama was never meant to have a happy ending.
“From the start, this drama was about surviving in a chaotic era, where simply staying alive was already a struggle. All the love and hatred, every misunderstanding and decision, every moment of waiting, eventually turned to ashes. The wind blew those ashes away until nothing remained,” the viewer wrote.
Another fan said they had prepared themselves for a tragic ending. Even so, they never expected it to be this heartbreaking and regretted watching the finale before reading spoilers.
