The biggest questions concern the fate of Hong Xian’s unborn child and Wei Rao’s future after she takes control of the imperial court. Both plot points leave plenty of room for the story to continue.

There are also reports that preparations for a second season are underway, although no official announcement has been made by the production team or streaming platform. Meanwhile, news of another drama project from the same production team, titled Zhi Jin Chai (執金釵), has added to the speculation surrounding the series’ future.

Two Major Questions Left Unanswered in the Finale

One of the most significant developments in the final episodes of Where the Mask Ends is the death of Liu Shuo (Zhou Lijie), Wei Rao’s younger brother.

After ruling as emperor for three years, Liu Shuo is killed following an incident involving his half-brother, Prince Fu (Zhou Boyu). He is lured into a forest, where a wild animal attacks him, leaving him with a severely injured leg. He eventually dies from blood loss.

His death leaves Wei Rao devastated and seemingly without a way to protect her family’s position at court. However, her half-sister Hong Xian (Jin Tianruyi), who was married to Liu Shuo, reveals that she is carrying the late emperor’s child.

The pregnancy gives Wei Rao a new reason to fight for her family’s future. She takes control of the imperial court, intending to protect the unborn child and secure the next generation’s claim to the throne.

However, the revelation raises an important question: Will Hong Xian survive childbirth? Viewers are also wondering whether the baby will be a boy or a girl, as the child’s gender could affect the possibility of inheriting the throne.

The second unanswered question concerns Wei Rao’s position as the new power behind the throne.

In the final scene, she steps in to meet the court officials on behalf of her deceased brother. Their expressions and reactions suggest that not everyone is willing to accept her authority.

Wei Rao ends the drama with a determined declaration: “As long as I’m alive, everything will get better.”

The scene suggests that maintaining control of the imperial court may be far more difficult than taking it over. If a second season happens, Wei Rao could face a new political struggle against officials who refuse to accept her leadership.

Is Where the Mask Ends Season 2 Already in the Works?

These unresolved storylines have prompted viewers to call for a continuation. Fans want to know whether Hong Xian’s child will survive and how Wei Rao will deal with opposition from within the imperial court.

Reports have suggested that a second season is already in preparation. However, neither the production team nor the streaming platform has officially confirmed that the series will return.

There is also a potential challenge for the writers. Where the Mask Ends is adapted from a completed novel by Xiao Jiaren. This means a second season would likely require an original storyline that goes beyond the source material.

The creative team would need to develop new conflicts and determine how Wei Rao’s story progresses after the events of the first season.

Nevertheless, the finale has left enough unanswered questions to provide a possible foundation for another chapter.

New Project Zhi Jin Chai Fuels Speculation About the Series’ Future

Adding to the discussion, the production team behind Where the Mask Ends is reportedly preparing another drama titled Zhi Jin Chai (執金釵).

According to media reports, Zhi Jin Chai has a completely different storyline from Where the Mask Ends. However, no official synopsis has been made available detailing its setting, characters, or central conflict.

As a result, there is currently insufficient information to explain exactly how the two stories differ.

The announcement of the new project has nevertheless sparked speculation among viewers. Some have wondered whether the two productions could feature interconnected storylines or some form of crossover.

For now, however, there is no confirmation that Zhi Jin Chai is a sequel, spin-off, or part of the same fictional universe as Where the Mask Ends.

Its development should therefore not be taken as evidence that a second season of Where the Mask Ends is moving forward.

Where the Mask Ends Scores 7.0 on Douban and Sets an Advertising Record

Beyond the speculation about a second season, Where the Mask Ends has also delivered impressive results during its run.

The 30-episode drama earned a 7.0 rating on Douban, surpassing Tian Xiwei’s previous series Pursuit of Jade, co-starring Zhang Linghe, which received a score of 6.4.

The drama also demonstrated strong commercial appeal, attracting a total of 255 advertising sponsors, averaging 8.5 sponsors per episode.

That figure surpassed the previous record held by Mystic Nine (九门), which secured 212 advertising sponsors.

The achievement further highlights Tian Xiwei’s growing commercial value following the success of Pursuit of Jade. She has also reportedly attracted interest from luxury brands, including Bulgari, although no official announcement regarding such a partnership has been made.

With its strong Douban score, impressive advertising performance, and unresolved storylines, Where the Mask Ends has given viewers plenty to discuss even after its finale.

For now, fans will have to wait for official news to find out whether Tian Xiwei and Yan An will reunite for a second season and continue Wei Rao’s story.
