LayarHijau — The period drama Where the Mask Ends (嫁金钗), starring Tian Xiwei and Yan An, has drawn attention after its finale aired. Viewers spotted text reading “AI-generated” appearing upside down in one scene.
The faint text is visible in the upper right corner of a shot of bamboo leaves with no actors in it. According to industry insiders cited by HK01, the shot was reportedly created with AI and then flipped horizontally to fit the composition. The watermark that came with the source footage was flipped along with it and was never removed. Screenshots spread widely, and the topic briefly reached the top of Weibo’s hot search list.

Viewers’ criticism centers on the production workflow. Before airing, an episode typically goes through editing, color grading, final review, and platform approval, yet the watermark made it through every stage. Some viewers also pointed out that certain soldier scenes use only overhead camera angles, with the characters and backgrounds looking poorly blended. Those scenes were reportedly made with AI and then composited. The drama is said to carry an “S+” rating, an internal classification system used by streaming platforms in mainland China to mark major productions.
Chinese netizens are divided. Some say a single shot is no big deal as long as the story is good. Others worry that if this is tolerated, the film and TV industry will become even more lax about using AI.
According to HK01, the main issue is not the use of AI itself. The technology is already common in production, for example to add frames, fix visual flaws, or generate distant backgrounds. Since September 2025, China has had rules requiring AI-generated content to be labeled. The text in the scene was not a label deliberately added by the crew, but a default watermark from the software used to generate the footage. This has led to suspicions that the AI material was not processed and reported according to standard.
Viewers also complained that there has been no explanation from the drama’s team, either before or after the discovery came to light. HK01 reports that the production team and the broadcast platforms have stayed silent and have not responded.
