LayarHijau — Actor Cheng Lei, who is currently drawing attention for his role in the drama The Lament of Autumn (玉簟秋), talked about his ideal partner in a video. The question came from actress Guli Nazha, who sat in the back seat of the car while Cheng Lei sat in the front passenger seat next to the driver. Cheng Lei first answered nervously, “There’s no specific type.”
Through a game of picking preferences, however, he went on to name his criteria one by one: long, straight hair, a talent for drawing, a love of cats, a taste for sports, and the ability to be both lively and calm. He added that the “cuteness” he has in mind is the natural quality a person gives off, not a surface impression.

After finishing the list, Cheng Lei suddenly changed course. “If I truly fall for someone, none of these conditions count,” he said. He described himself as the type whose feelings grow over time, and said that when he meets someone who really catches his heart, he becomes more cautious and does not rush to make a move.
In the video, Cheng Lei looked tense and kept fiddling with the bag beside him. Chinese netizens responded with jokes, and one commented that his answer came close to naming a specific person outright.
Chinese netizens quickly compared the list with the public image of his co-star Xu Ruohan. Long hair, a love of drawing, and an affection for cats were seen as a close match.
In The Lament of Autumn, Cheng Lei plays Yu Changxuan, the fifth son of the Yu family and a young warlord amid the turmoil of Republic-era China. Xu Ruohan plays Ye Pingjun, a student from a struggling family who is drawn into an assassination attempt targeting Yu Changxuan. The drama premiered on October 12, 2026.
Off screen, the two appeared together at four promotional events within a month and were seen as having good chemistry. Earlier, on the show Hello, Saturday, Cheng Lei was asked which three actresses he most wanted to work with again. He answered Xu Ruohan, Ye Pingjun, and Xixi, even though all three point to the same person: her real name, her character’s name, and her nickname. The host teased him for being too clingy.
Some fans urged netizens not to read too much into it. They noted that in an earlier interview, Cheng Lei named actress Tang Wei as his reference point for an ideal partner, which suggests his taste follows its own logic.
