LayarHijau — The new Chinese drama When I Meet the Moon (折月亮) has premiered to mixed reactions from viewers in China. Some praise the chemistry between the two leads, while others criticize the color filter, the pacing of the early episodes, and the lead actress’s original voice.
The drama stars Lin Yi and Lu Yuxiao and is adapted from the novel of the same name by Zhu Yi. It is the final installment of the Nanwu Trilogy, after the first two works, Hidden Love (偷偷藏不住) and The First Frost (难哄), were adapted for the screen. As the finale, the drama has been eagerly awaited by fans of the novels and of Chinese dramas.

The story follows Yun Li (Lu Yuxiao), a quiet girl with social anxiety who has had a secret crush on Fu Shize (Lin Yi) since high school. As an adult, she finally gathers the courage to approach him. The two begin dating but break up because of differences in outlook and real-life problems. Yun Li then moves abroad, while Fu Shize focuses on his career in scientific research.
Years later, Yun Li returns to China and the two meet again. This time, Fu Shize is the one who pursues her, trying to make up for the past and win her back.
The leads’ pairing is one of the drama’s main draws. Lin Yi appeared in The Tale of Rose (玫瑰的故事) and is known for his fresh-faced image. Lu Yuxiao gained attention for playing Shangguan Qian in My Journey to You (云之羽). This is their first project together. Their height difference and how well they look together have drawn attention, as have a drunken kiss scene and a wedding dress scene. Some viewers find their interactions natural and say the romantic mood works.
The drama also incorporates VR technology, using virtual settings to create a dreamlike look for a story of secret youthful love and a reunion years later. Not all viewers are convinced. Some feel the caramel-toned color filter is too heavy and hurts the visuals. Lu Yuxiao’s original voice in her dialogue, the pacing of the early episodes, and the editing have also drawn varying degrees of criticism.
On its first day, the drama’s on-platform popularity index peaked at 6,336. That suggests viewers are still paying attention, but buzz and word of mouth have yet to line up. As the closing chapter of the Nanwu Trilogy, When I Meet the Moon also faces comparisons with the first two works. How the romance develops and how well the characters are fleshed out in the coming episodes will determine whether it can hold on to its audience.
