When I Meet the Moon is adapted from Folding Moon, the third novel in Zhu Yi’s Nanwu trilogy. As discussed in an earlier LayarHijau article, the character linking this novel to the previous two is Fu Zhengchu.
In episode three, Tang Lin takes Yun Li to a homestay owned by her friend Xia Congsheng, where they run into Fu Zhengchu and Fu Shize. In both the novel and the drama, Xia Congsheng and Fu Zhengchu are siblings, while Fu Shize is their uncle.
Hidden Love Novel Official English Version
Hidden Love Vol 1
Tang Lin deliberately brings up Yun Li’s experience of being turned down when she asked a man for his WeChat number. The topic livens up the conversation. Xia Congsheng teases Fu Zhengchu for flirting with beautiful women, including asking for their WeChat numbers. Fu Zhengchu fires back by bringing up an incident from when he was still in middle school.
“Didn’t you think Sang Zhi’s brother was handsome when you met him, and ask for his WeChat?” Fu Zhengchu says. Xia Congsheng is both angry and embarrassed.
For readers of the Hidden Love novel, this scene refers to Sang Zhi’s middle school years. She was told to bring her parents to meet her homeroom teacher, but was afraid of getting scolded. Sang Zhi first asked her older brother, Sang Yan, to stand in for their parents, but he refused. She then asked Duan Jiaxu, who happened to be visiting their home, to pose as her brother and meet the teacher.
In the Hidden Love novel, Fu Zhengchu deliberately asked his homeroom teacher to summon his parents so he could get closer to Sang Zhi. He then asked his older sister, Xia Congsheng, to stand in for their parents. Xia Congsheng was drawn to Duan Jiaxu and asked for his WeChat number, but he turned her down. The rejection became one of the most embarrassing moments of her life. By the time they discuss it in Folding Moon, Fu Zhengchu and Xia Congsheng still believe Duan Jiaxu is Sang Zhi’s real brother.
Xia Congsheng does not appear in the Hidden Love drama. When I Meet the Moon, meanwhile, keeps this conversation but moves the setting from a hot pot restaurant in the novel to a homestay.
The drama also leaves out Deng Chuqi, Yun Li’s best friend in the novel. Her role goes to Tang Lin, who in the novel is Yun Li’s dormitory roommate. In the novel, Tang Lin, who is also a graduate student, likes and pursues Fu Zhengchu. He avoids her because he still has feelings for Sang Zhi.
Another change is the missing supermarket encounter between Fu Shize and Fu Zhengchu and the group of Sang Yan, Sang Zhi, Wen Yifan, and Duan Jiaxu, as told in the novels Hard to Coax (the source novel of The First Frost) and Folding Moon.
In Folding Moon, Yun Li visits Deng Chuqi’s apartment and meets her roommate, Xia Congsheng. Fu Shize happens to drive Fu Zhengchu over to hang out at Xia Congsheng’s apartment, and the four of them go grocery shopping together at a supermarket. There they run into Sang Zhi’s group. That encounter is told in Hard to Coax, while Folding Moon has them discuss it over hot pot, where the WeChat conversation takes place.
In the novel, Fu Zhengchu mentions Sang Zhi’s name several times. Since the encounter with Sang Yan’s group has been removed from the drama, it seems less likely that Sang Yan and Wen Yifan will appear.
