When I Meet the Moon shares a story universe with Hidden Love (偷偷藏不住), starring Zhao Lusi and Chen Zheyuan, and The First Frost (难哄), starring Bai Jingting and Zhang Ruonan. All three are adapted from novels by Chinese author Zhu Yi.
In the trailer, Lu Yuxiao plays Yun Li, a graduate student who reunites with Fu Shize (played by Lin Yi), a brilliant former schoolmate she has had a crush on since high school. The two work together on artificial intelligence (AI) research and grow closer. Yun Li also makes no effort to hide her feelings.
Yun Li’s younger brother, Yun Ye, asks how far his sister has gotten in her pursuit. Yun Li answers, “We’ve reached the friends stage.” Yun Ye teases, “Just friends?”
The scene then cuts to another location, where Fu Zhengchu, Fu Shize’s nephew, says the line between friends and a couple is sometimes paper-thin.
After a period of testing the waters, Fu Shize confesses. “Before I met you, I walked alone for a very long time. Just when I thought I’d never find my way out, you appeared,” he says.
Yun Li can hardly believe it and asks, “The person they say you want to ask out, who is it?” Fu Shize answers firmly, “It’s you. It’s always been you.”
The trailer also shows the two kissing during a date at Fu Shize’s home. On campus, Fu Shize tries to kiss Yun Li in public. Blushing, she steps back and says, “It’s broad daylight, you know.” He replies with a smile, “Is dating not allowed?”
When I Meet the Moon tells the story of Yun Li, a socially awkward young woman who bravely pursues Fu Shize, a gifted former schoolmate she has idolized since high school. They meet again when Yun Li begins graduate school in Nanwu, the city where the story is set. Yun Li openly confesses her feelings, and the two become a couple.
The relationship ends after Fu Shize suffers a personal tragedy, takes a leave from school, and withdraws from those around him. Yun Li later continues her studies abroad.
Years later, they meet again. Fu Shize now has the courage to face his emotional wounds and pursues Yun Li earnestly. The two finally get back together and live happily ever after.
