The love story of Wei Rao and Lu Zhuo does not end in tragedy: both survive and remain together. However, the finale is also marked by the death of Liu Shuo, Wei Rao’s younger brother, who has become emperor. He is killed three years after taking the throne.
The events begin shortly after Wei Rao and Lu Zhuo marry. The emperor pretends to be gravely ill to test the loyalty of the Crown Prince, who holds the title Prince Duan (Zheng Hao), and of Wei Rao. The Crown Prince chooses to rebel. Lu Zhuo then fights the rebel Han Liao (Dai Gaozheng) and the Crown Prince.
During the fighting, Lu Zhuo fakes his death to escape. Han Liao immediately takes Wei Rao hostage and declares that he will marry her. Standing before Lu Zhuo’s coffin, Wei Rao says in anguish that he is the only person in her life who has steadfastly chosen her. She then stabs Han Liao with a poisoned needle and sets a fire to burn him. At that moment, Lu Zhuo rises from the coffin and strikes Han Liao dead.
After the rebellion is put down, the Crown Prince is sentenced to death. Wei Rao is given the title Protector Princess. The emperor then names Liu Shuo (Zhou Lijie), his son with Zhou Fu (Mao Linlin), as his successor. Liu Shuo is Wei Rao’s maternal half brother, and she supports him wholeheartedly.
Three years after his enthronement, Liu Shuo is lured into a forest by his older brother, Prince Fu (Zhou Boyu). He is mauled by wild animals and bleeds to death. Before he dies, he says: “When Father passed away, he told me to treat well the one brother I had left. Even though my sister urged me again and again to kill him, I still showed him leniency.” He adds that the next day is when the vassal kings arrive in the capital, an event held once every three years. He hints that Prince Fu is likely to use the occasion to seize the throne.
Wei Rao holds her brother’s body and weeps. She then says: “Prince Fu is dead. His Majesty cherished his brother and has chosen him to be buried alongside him.” Meanwhile, Lu Zhuo kills Prince Fu, and the couple work together to quell the turmoil.
Wei Rao feels lost about the future. Her stepsister, Hong Xian (Jin Tianruyi), places Wei Rao’s hand on her belly, signaling that she is carrying Liu Shuo’s child. Wei Rao regains her resolve and decides to back the unborn heir to the throne. She orders the Grand Empress Dowager placed under house arrest, and the next day she meets the vassal kings alone, in the emperor’s place. “Even if a thousand calamities befall me and every evil closes in, I will find a way to make them submit. Everything will be all right, as long as I am alive,” she says.
The 30-episode drama is reported to have secured a title sponsor and 255 advertising sponsors. Taiwanese media reporting the news say this boosts Tian Xiwei’s standing as one of the leading actresses of the post-95 generation, meaning those born in 1995 or later. Early in the series, Tian Xiwei plays both the real and the false daughter of a noble family, Wei Rao and Jun Dai. Her performance has been praised for distinguishing the two characters through her gaze alone.
