Trailer for The Noble Compared to Where the Mask Ends, and Why Costume Dramas Often End Up With Similar Themes

LayarHijau — The trailer for the costume drama The Noble (金枝) has been compared to Where the Mask Ends (嫁金钗) by some netizens in China. The Noble stars Li Yitong and Chen Xingxu, while Where the Mask Ends stars Tian Xiwei. The issue was discussed in a commentary by Sohu Entertainment, which also looked at why costume romance dramas (guou, 古偶) so often arrive with overlapping themes.

The comparison arose because some lines in the The Noble trailer sound similar to dialogue from the female lead of Where the Mask Ends. In the The Noble trailer, the heroine says, “By what right are we born to be humiliated? By what right does one day of lowly status (jianji) mean every generation after us must remain lowly? I will pass myself off as a noble princess and carve out a world of my own in this capital.”

A similar line appears in Where the Mask Ends: “Why are some people born rich and draped in silk, while we are born without enough to eat or wear?”

According to the commentary, the two dramas are not identical in their character relationships or story direction. However, several elements are said to overlap heavily: a woman from the lower rungs of society, an identity swap, entry into a prominent family, and a reversal of fortune. That, it says, is why viewers quickly thought of Where the Mask Ends when they saw the The Noble trailer.

Not the first time

This kind of thematic clash is not new in costume romance dramas. Earlier, a wave of demon-hunting dramas arrived in quick succession. Love Game in Eastern Fantasy (永夜星河) began filming in August 2023 and wrapped in January 2024. Fangs of Fortune (大梦归离) began filming in October 2023 and wrapped in February 2024. Moonlit Reunion (子夜归) began filming in January 2024 and wrapped in May of the same year.

Several different production companies chose the same demon-hunting and supernatural tales genre. Their air dates varied, but their production periods overlapped almost entirely.

The same market signals

The commentary argues that choosing themes is not entirely independent of the market. When developing a project, production companies weigh platform demand, audience taste, the room a theme has to grow, and commercial returns. Each team makes its own judgment, but all face the same market and receive similar industry signals.

It gives examples. When stories of women’s growth become an important direction for costume dramas, elements such as lower-class women rising in status, women in business, and power struggles within noble households easily land on many companies’ lists. When audiences show interest in traditional mythology, supernatural folklore, and fantasy worlds, demon-hunting stories are seen as worth developing.

The influence of web novels

The web novel ecosystem is also said to shape how concentrated costume drama themes become. Many of these dramas are adapted from web novels. After years of development, the web novel market has a relatively mature genre system. Setups such as rebirth for revenge, marrying first and falling in love later, substitute brides, true and false heiresses, power struggles within noble households, and being transported into a novel are all familiar to readers.

Platform reading data, reader feedback, and trending genres also influence which direction authors take. As a result, film and TV companies are not choosing from a random, diverse pool of works with no connection to each other. Popular novels tend to cluster in genres the market has already validated. Different authors may use different characters and stories while sharing similar plot motifs. When production companies pick novels to adapt, overlapping themes naturally follow.

A long gap from development to broadcast

Another factor is the long timeline from development to airing. A drama typically goes through acquiring the novel’s rights, script development, project approval, casting, filming, post-production, and platform scheduling. These stages often take years. When a theme is chosen early on, market conditions may have changed by the time the drama finally airs.

This gap means choices made by creators several years ago, after passing through their own production cycles, can reach the market in the same year or two. Audiences see a theme suddenly become crowded, while inside the industry it may be the result of a round of theme selection made years earlier. Even when a new trend emerges, projects already in production cannot necessarily change course in time.

Similar themes do not mean a lack of originality

The commentary stresses that similar themes do not automatically mean a work lacks freshness. In the author’s view, the real question is whether creators can find their own voice within an established genre framework. The costume romance market needs genre-based productions because audiences have stable genre preferences, and platforms and production companies need projects with relatively predictable returns. But once a genre matures, the new challenge is keeping characters and plots from growing increasingly alike.
