LayarHijau — The campus drama Sunshine Through the Rain (今天是太阳雨), starring Yang Chaoyue and Dong Sicheng (Winwin of NCT), has premiered with four episodes released at once. The drama secured eight advertising sponsors for its debut. According to Taiwanese media reports, that figure surpassed the premiere sponsorship of When I Meet the Moon (折月亮), starring Lu Yuxiao and Lin Yi.
Chinese viewers have highlighted three things about the drama: Yang Chaoyue’s acting, the chemistry between the two leads, and the direction.

Sunshine Through the Rain takes over the time slot of The Lament of Autumn (玉簟秋), starring Cheng Lei and Xu Ruohan. During the same period, When I Meet the Moon and Jing Boran’s new mystery drama, The Silent Storm (谷雨), are also airing.
Yang Chaoyue has not starred in a drama as the female lead for quite some time. Fans bought out 30,000 seats through cloud screenings, a form of virtual seat booking meant to draw in viewers. With support from Yang Chaoyue, Dong Sicheng, and colleagues in the entertainment industry, the total reportedly exceeded 100,000 cloud screenings, at a cost of 3 million yuan (about $449,000).
The first thing viewers praised is Yang Chaoyue’s performance as Zheng Yu, a high-achieving student from a low-income family. Zheng Yu holds the top rank at her school to keep her scholarship. After classes, she works part-time jobs to pay for her bedridden mother’s medical care.
Despite her hardships, Zheng Yu never complains. She stays composed and carries on with her duties. Viewers have widely praised this restrained performance.
Yang Chaoyue was previously criticized for stiff acting in the fantasy period drama Love You Seven Times (七时吉祥). This time, many viewers say she is better suited to calm, reserved characters than to more expressive ones.
The second highlight is her chemistry with Dong Sicheng. He plays Chen Yanzhou, a top student with a heart condition. Because of his health, Chen Yanzhou took a year off from school. After returning to campus, he becomes Zheng Yu’s classmate, and the two compete fiercely for a scholarship.
Chen Yanzhou’s wallet was once stolen while he was at the hospital. Zheng Yu helps recover it, but he briefly misunderstands and suspects her of taking it. After learning the truth, he changes his view of her. The two develop a sense of mutual understanding that hints at budding romance.
The third highlight is the direction by Mao Deshu, who previously directed When I Fly Towards You (当我飞奔向你). The camera work and editing of Sunshine Through the Rain are described as smooth and enjoyable to watch. Some viewers even say the drama is better than When I Meet the Moon, which is airing in the same period.
