LayarHijau – Chinese drama Genius Girlfriend (天才女友), starring Tian Xiwei and Hu Yitian, has become one of the hottest topics on Chinese social media. This time, the spotlight is not only on the story itself but also on a heated debate that began after Weibo users compared the show’s female lead, Lin Zhixia, with legendary physicist Albert Einstein.
The discussion started trending on Weibo on August 2 after several users compiled details about Lin Zhixia that had been revealed throughout the drama’s first few episodes. They then compared those details with widely known facts about Einstein, giving rise to the phrase “defeating Einstein in four ways.”

According to the viral summary, Lin Zhixia has an IQ of 174. The character is also portrayed as having finished reading A Brief History of Time at the age of 10, decided on her research direction at just nine years old, and earned her Ph.D. by the age of 22.
Weibo users then contrasted those achievements with information commonly associated with Einstein, whose IQ is generally estimated to have been between 160 and 170. They also pointed out that Einstein reportedly began reading philosophical works at 13, entered university at 17, and graduated at 22. Those comparisons quickly fueled widespread discussion online.
Notably, the information used in the comparison was not presented through a single scene, opening narration, or voice-over in the drama. Instead, the details about Lin Zhixia were revealed gradually across multiple scenes throughout the first several episodes before being compiled by Weibo users.
As the topic gained traction, several Chinese media outlets reported on it. However, some reports described the drama as if it featured an opening narration or voice-over directly comparing Lin Zhixia with Einstein and concluding that the famous scientist had been “completely outclassed.”
Based on the episodes that have aired, however, Einstein’s name is never actually mentioned in the drama. There is also no dialogue, narration, or voice-over explicitly stating that Lin Zhixia surpasses Einstein in four categories. The comparison originated from Weibo users’ own compilation of information revealed throughout the series before it was picked up and amplified by various media outlets.
Even so, the reports sparked criticism aimed at the drama’s writers and production team. Some netizens argued that Lin Zhixia’s achievements were exaggerated to the point that they appeared designed to surpass one of history’s greatest scientists.
Viewers also criticized the character’s consistency within the story itself. Despite being portrayed as a physics prodigy with an IQ of 174, Lin Zhixia loses a mathematics competition to the male lead because of her lack of teamwork. Others also pointed out what they considered scientific inaccuracies in the drama, saying they undermined the credibility of her genius image.
At the same time, many users defended the series. Some questioned why Genius Girlfriend had become the target of criticism when numerous novels feature male protagonists with IQs as high as 200 without attracting similar backlash.
Others argued that Genius Girlfriend is adapted from a fictional web novel, making it perfectly reasonable for its lead character to possess extraordinary abilities. In their view, fictional stories often exaggerate their protagonists’ talents, so applying real-world standards to such characters misses the point.
The debate continues across Weibo. While some viewers believe Lin Zhixia’s characterization is overly exaggerated and difficult to believe, others argue that the controversy grew largely because media coverage blurred the line between the drama’s actual content and a comparison originally created by Weibo users.
